As we approach the end of the year, I believe those who have been paying attention to the auction market should know that the recent months have been auction season. With various precious items lining up for auction, Christie’s has also announced two special auctions next month, bringing a perfect end to this autumn’s Hong Kong auctions. A friendly reminder to all wine collectors and enthusiasts to take special note.
Christie’s Wine Department announces that it will present two live auctions on December 5th, led by the prestigious Romanée-Conti cellar, followed closely by the rare and esteemed Karuizawa series of spirits. The Romanée-Conti cellar session, which will kick off in the morning, will feature nearly a hundred lots, with most of the rare collections presented in their original wooden cases, many of which have never been opened. This includes 241 bottles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC), spanning 17 vintages of Montrachet from 1987 to 2014. It is worth mentioning that Christie’s Asia Pacific Wine Department Director, Wen-Fong Chan, even stated that such a significant vertical collection of Montrachet from these vintages and varieties is extremely rare in the market, providing collectors with an unprecedented opportunity to acquire world-renowned top white wines. This is sure to attract global collectors’ attention, and intense bidding is expected at the auction.
In addition, there are other highlighted items on the scene, including rare vintages from the DRC winery, such as 2002, 2005, and 2009 from Grands-Echézeaux and Echézeaux; fine wines from 2006 to 2010 of Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant; prestigious La Tâche from 1997, 2007 to 2010; as well as aged wines from the DRC winery from 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
As for another auction featuring a series of rare spirits, it will bring a variety of wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Australian Penfolds Winery, Scotland, and Japanese whiskey, as well as top-grade “14th Generation” sake. Selected items include multiple cases of 1983 and 2005 Margaux, 1986 Mouton, 2000 and 2005 Lafite; 1982 Lafleur in three-liter bottles; wines from the 1990s by Henri Jayer, Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux; as well as fine wines from the 2010s by Armand Rousseau, including Chambertin, Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Ruchottes Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes, Gevrey Chambertin Clos St. Jacques; this auction also features rare Penfolds Grange wines, including the winery’s 1951 vintage wine, which was never publicly released and carries the name of its first year of production.
Of course, the highlight of this rare liquor auction will undoubtedly be the prestigious Karuizawa series, with a focus on the Karuizawa Golden Blue Geisha 40 years, the Water of Life 45 years, the Samurai series 30 years old, and the prestigious Sumo Triple Set valued at HK$200,000; while other highlights include the Glenfiddich 50 years, a small amount of top-grade “Fourteenth Generation” sake, with the latter bringing the most sought-after Ryusen and Baiyun Lai for sake lovers, each carefully collected by Christie’s wine specialists.
