The JW Anderson 2023 Autumn/Winter collection, which made its debut at London Fashion Week, once again showcases designer Jonathan Anderson’s boundless creativity. This season, the preview featured the use of tartan fabric with motifs of “male genitalia” and “victory gestures,” which also became the focal point of the fashion show.
Scottish legendary dancer Michael Clark served as Jonathan Anderson’s design inspiration and collaborator for this season, bringing a fresh interpretation while reflecting on their respective classics. Clark is known for his fusion of classical dance and popular culture, earning titles such as the “bad boy of British dance” and “punk choreographer.” The show opened with models wearing vests emblazoned with the words “Michael Clark,” clearly indicating that he is the central figure who inspired this season’s collection.

The new season’s designs still showcase Jonathan Anderson’s infinite playful creativity, with yellow overalls printed with smiley face patterns, jumpsuits made from Tesco supermarket shopping bags, and soda packaging created from Clark’s dramatic stage costumes. The collection also features iconic asymmetrical cuts and experimental oversized silhouettes, creating contrast and richness through the use of materials. Fuzzy cropped tops paired with fitted trousers, knit tops adorned with oversized thick round edges, distressed knit sweaters with frayed hems, and strapless dresses with fur accents, including the ruffled edge tops that bring to mind the “ruffled edge shorts” from the 2013 autumn menswear collection.
The series is not lacking in practical and classic items, such as suits, coats, and striped sweatshirts with the “Michael Clark” logo. Following the pigeon handbag and frog shoes, JW Anderson has now released “cat claw” high-heeled shoes, once again becoming the center of attention.
