The Chanel 2023 spring/summer fashion show opened with a black and white short film starring Kristen Stewart, who served as the inspiration for this season. The film was directed by the Dutch photography duo Inez & Vinoodh. Stewart emerged from the classic Parisian theater Cinéma Le Champo, weaving through the streets and small cafes, paying homage to the New Wave classic film “Last Year at Marienbad.”
The latest season is inspired by this work, with its avant-garde filming techniques and non-traditional narrative style creating a bizarre and eerie atmosphere, making it a groundbreaking masterpiece that subverts the art of film. The costumes designed by Gabrielle Chanel further embody the essence of her elegant and flexible fashion style.
Virginie Viard said, “The movies we’ve seen, the enchanting movies, the movies we create for ourselves, ‘Last Year at Marienbad,’ the New Wave, the style established by Gabrielle Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld’s creativity, the charming night, feather decorations, sequins, high heels, all of this mixed together is intoxicating.”
This season’s fashion style is elegantly portrayed like a character in a movie, filled with classic Chanel elements such as bows, feather scarves, Lorraine stone boots, embroidered white jackets, deconstructed floral patterns, pink herringbone tweed, polka dot prints, and more; gold velvet dresses and black side-slit dresses showcase graceful figures, as well as exquisite evening gowns. The new collection is a wonderful collage, mixing different elements to create an imaginary world, with lace and floral patterns that are breathtakingly beautiful.
In terms of handbags, the popular Chanel 22 handbag welcomes a brand new mini version, paired with a pearl chain, which looks more exquisite. There is also a classic handbag with a cute heart-shaped lock, and jewelry is adorned with plenty of pearl elements, complementing this season’s look.
