The new generation of power in Hong Kong is gathering momentum, “All-Star Talent Show” not only created a super popular boy group, but also swept across Hong Kong; last year, there was him – ANSONBEAN Chen Yishen, rising rapidly in the music industry and fashion circle with unprecedented popularity, becoming another hot name.
With monolids, when he smiles, his eyes will “narrow into a line”, coupled with a sunny smile, a face full of innocence and cuteness undoubtedly are Ansonbean’s most charming qualities. In addition, his gestures exude a surging vitality and energy all over his body, which is also the reason why he left a deep impression, making his first appearance on “Produce Camp 3” immediately caught the attention of several star judges.
Looking back when he was just a 19-year-old freshman, the young man in front of us, Ansonbean, is about to celebrate his 21st birthday. Less than a year after his debut, he has signed as the first artist under Louis Koo’s Cool Style, and has also gained the favor of major brands. His debut process has been smooth and fortunate.
Luck from the god of fortune, talent and hard work are equally important.
With a strong genetic inheritance from his mother who excels in dancing, Ansonbean has had a deep connection with dance and music since he was young. He describes himself as someone who enjoys challenges and thrills, never content with the status quo, willing to leave his comfort zone, constantly trying out more possibilities, and exploring his multifaceted potential. For example, even though he is not familiar with RAP, he chose to compete using RAP. “The more difficult it is, the more I want to challenge myself” is the belief that drives him to fearlessly face failure, seek change, and constantly innovate, allowing Ansonbean to fully demonstrate his youthful explosiveness, representing the spirit and style of the new generation.
He was asked to come up with a word to go with the shoot, and he said, “HULK.” What connection does the incredibly powerful green giant have with him, and what kind of power lies within him? As a newly debuted singer, what expectations does he have for the new generation and for himself? Time flies, and he is already prepared in front of the camera. In the October feature, Ansonbean is ready to let you feel his vitality.
“I also really want to be able to release music that can influence others like they do.”
“I feel that my characteristic is more ‘bouncy’.”
Please describe Ansonbean’s personality, he described himself as “bouncy” without hesitation. Perhaps it stems from his close relationship with “dancing”?
Ansonbean’s background is both an advantage and the best proof of his abilities. His mother, a dance teacher with thirty years of experience, introduced him and his brother to dancing at a young age, helping them build a solid foundation under her guidance. Always a street dance enthusiast, he was already a skilled dancer. Despite being accepted into a prestigious university in the UK, he returned to Hong Kong in search of more opportunities to perform while studying. Eventually, he participated in “The Voice 3” and won third place, launching his career in the entertainment industry.
His “jump” also refers to his lively personality.
“Maybe when I’m thinking, speaking, or even during filming, my mind often has something ‘pop’ up, and then it makes me ‘jump’ a lot.” Indeed, during the filming process, Ansonbean is also “non-stop.” In order to have a better presentation during filming, he sometimes lies on the ground doing push-ups, sometimes casually picks up a chair to do weightlifting, and when walking, he runs and jumps, full of energy, the best example of invincible youth!
He is straightforward and frank, admitting that his “impulsiveness” stems from not being accustomed to overthinking, saying and doing whatever he wants. As a result, he has also developed an impatient side. “Actually, anytime, anything, especially when performing or speaking.” Influenced by his impatient nature, Ansonbean shares that whenever he speaks, he cannot express himself in an orderly manner. However, because of this impulsive personality, he always steps onto the stage with an electrifying body. “Although this is a disadvantage, if used properly, I know it will be an advantage.”
Turning urgency into a driving force is certainly a unique skill, but Anson is well aware that while the benefits should be retained and utilized, the negative effects must also be addressed and improved. “I hope I can improve this ‘urgency’ thing, so that I can be a bit calmer. Then, I can do performances or anything else better, and enjoy myself more.”
That’s right, this dancing, free-spirited, and lively big boy successfully “jumped” into this circle.
Before entering the industry, Ansonbean mainly got to know the music industry through listening to songs. “Listening to everyone using music to express their feelings or to influence others, so I think music is very powerful.” He continued, “I listen to songs from different singers and their stories, and I also really want to be like them, able to release music that can influence others.” Anson admitted that this largely led to his desire to become a singer. Now that his dream has finally come true, he really hopes to bring out his story and message, and share it with everyone.
“While breaking away from the old, you are actually challenging yourself to become someone new.”
“Because life only has one chance, I feel there are many things to try.”
From the interview, it was learned that Ansonbean greatly admires Michael Jackson and “Big Brother” Leslie Cheung. Since childhood, he has viewed these two legendary figures as role models, “because these two artists are both legendary. They were the initial inspiration for me to like performing. I have watched many of their clips, seeing their confidence on stage, and every time they bring out something new from the old, I feel that this quality is very worth referencing, very worth learning for us.”
Anson believes that the magic of breaking old and creating new lies in challenging oneself and letting new things lead oneself out of the comfort zone. Because he firmly believes that “life only has one chance, I think there are many things to try, if you don’t challenge yourself more, you will miss the opportunity.”
Standing on the ruins, creating new things, as a new force in the music industry, how does Anson understand the positioning and role of “new”? “Because the times are always progressing, changing, even the whole culture is changing, and life will inevitably continue to have different inspirations.” Creation comes from life, but for Anson, innovation needs to be based on life. He explains seriously, every innovation comes from life, from the surroundings, being able to apply things from life to different works is a basic and fundamental way of thinking.
It seems that he is always energetic and lively in front of the camera, but in fact, he is calm and insightful inside.
The new generation, especially in recent years, has received special attention and anticipation from the local music industry and fans, which is both high expectations and encouragement. But for Anson, what qualities should the new generation possess?
“Should have…” He paused for a moment, it was the first time in the interview, after some thought, he answered very seriously: “The ability to ‘experience’.”
Confidence, attitude, even courage, goals, are all prerequisites for every newcomer to lay a solid foundation. However, Anson, who gives off a strong sense of drive, understands the importance of taking a step back before striding forward, allowing the senses to connect with life. “That is, to feel more about the things around you every day, and there will be more inspiration in creation,” he shares. “But I am still learning in this area,” Anson humbly adds.
When it comes to qualities, what qualities and characteristics does Anson most appreciate about the two idols? “Their confidence and style.” From the two legendary figures, Anson realized that they both know how to bring out their inner thoughts, or things they want to express, and at the same time can convey them to people around them, even to the whole world. “I think this quality is irreplaceable.”
Talking about others is never easy, and Anson, who is just starting out, may be getting ahead of himself a bit. But he firmly believes, “I think this requires time, effort, careful planning, and it can be done.” Youthful energy, sharp dance skills, and captivating presence may be the image Anson has created for himself, but his inner self exudes nothing but belief, determination, and confidence.
“I enjoy keeping things exciting and different.”
“I, on stage and off stage, actually have a little difference.”
“Three, two, one, Rolling!” Stepping left and right, then squatting down, he performs a one-armed backflip, showcasing his strength in front of everyone. Perfectly landing, he flashes a smile, leaving a perfect impression in your mind, showcasing his charm. With a combination of both hard and soft power, everyone admires his personal charm. How will Anson interpret his own charm?
“I don’t know either. I just laugh when I feel like it, and then I don’t know why I become sweet, haha,” he said, blushing instantly, revealing his innocent and carefree smile, instantly melting everyone present. Then he said, “It’s not like that, I don’t know either,” suddenly appearing shy and bashful, Anson’s true nature revealed in an instant.
He said directly, “I feel that I really like to do some exciting things. For example, I really like to try new things, and this has greatly influenced my personality.” Anson honestly admits that every time he faces a more explosive performance, he needs to push himself to be explosive or confident enough to go on stage, and after coming off stage, he feels less confident.
“I would describe myself as very similar to denim.”
On the day of the shoot, Anson put on Levi’s® latest Levi’s® Red™ Collection, likening his personality to denim fabric, both very versatile.
“I feel very diverse, with a lot of changes.” He humorously explained, “For example, jeans can have different combinations and colors, like the set I’m wearing now, with a loose cut leaning towards an oversized feel. But work pants are also quite attractive, comfortable and versatile. You can wear them without a shirt inside, just with a t-shirt, or with a tank top or shirt. In a way, it’s quite similar to my ‘chaotic’ nature, showing different faces and ways to everyone.” He added that even though everyone has heard of the name Ansonbean and may have a certain impression, he can actually show different sides to everyone.
Although Anson never considers himself outstanding, just like denim is a very common material, he firmly believes that any ordinary pair of jeans, as long as you are willing to spend some thought and time, can actually be styled in many different ways and show different effects.
“I have confidence that I will bring good things to everyone”
Anson, who likes to seek adventure and excitement in his own words, otherwise he will easily feel bored. Due to his adventurous personality, he is particularly willing to accept challenges. He released his first solo single “CRUSH (oh no!)” just last July, and just two months later – around the end of last month – he brought another new single “you made my day”; moreover, the new song has abandoned his usual powerful singing and rapping, trying a relaxed and sweet style. The MV has been viewed over 150,000 times in just two weeks since its release.
The styles are very different, but he still looks relaxed in front of the camera. “I am confident that I will continue to try and bring good things to everyone,” he said confidently.
As a newcomer, experience is certainly important and needs time to accumulate gradually, but before Anson seizes the opportunity, confidence needs to be strengthened. He is very clear that the thrill of daring to try is the best fuel. “For now, my songs all bring out my sunny and sweet side. I will continue to discover more about myself and let everyone get to know me.”
The theme of innovation, experimentation, and breakthroughs has always revolved around this interview, from being the third runner-up in “Produce Camp 3” to successfully debuting. Even a sunny boy can have a day when his brightness is overshadowed. What kind of impression does this sunny boy hope to bring to everyone? “I hope to show everyone the most authentic me.” He paused for a moment – it was the second time in the interview – and then said earnestly, “Because I believe that a person, as time passes and through different experiences, will continue to grow and change. I hope that in the future, as I release works and perform, others will be able to see my changes and growth along the way.”
It sounds like a solid yet relaxed feeling. In fact, it’s not too reckless when young.
Finally, I have to ask about his expectations after his debut. He suddenly became excited again: “I look forward to continuing to try new things, to continue to hone my skills. Because, the higher and more refined my skills are, the better I can handle more exciting performances. I hope everyone will continue to enjoy my work in the future.”
To send a message to a newcomer, perhaps patting them on the back and saying “keep up the good work” to let them know that there is unlimited support from family, friends, and the team behind them is just right. However, facing someone as energetic as Anson, stopping at just that seems a bit weak. Since he has always believed in “never afraid of difficulties, only afraid of not being difficult enough,” why not open your eyes wide, apply a little pressure from the side, and wait quietly for the day when this little bean sprouts.
