Spring evokes the fragrance of flowers and fruits, but have you ever thought that the scent of ink and paper can also be transformed into perfume? Diptyque recently launched its annual surprise creation, “L’Eau Papier,” a light fragrance inspired by calligraphy, white paper, and words. It weaves an unexpected olfactory story, perfectly capturing the delicate and gentle beauty of ink touching paper. It is definitely a fragrance of the highest quality!
The birth of “L’Eau Papier” stems from the shared love of beauty, art, and painting by the brand’s three founders, Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, and Yves Coueslant, combined with their curiosity, imagination, and passion for paper, creating the tactile beauty of “L’Eau Papier”.
Diptyque collaborated with perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin and French artist Alix Waline to create a new fragrance called “L’Eau Papier” – the water of ink and paper. Paying homage to the brand’s core creativity from multiple perspectives such as storytelling, texture, and name, it fully utilizes paper as an important medium to express creativity and presents the captivating stories and wonderful memories behind the fragrance.
In Diptyque’s perfume collection, lines and patterns, landscapes, and clear figures can be seen everywhere. This time, “L’Eau Papier” is adorned with an impressionist black and white abstract painting that is different from the brand’s traditional perfume illustrations. It cleverly combines perfume with paper, using dots to create ink marks that gradually spread on the paper. The front design of the oval label is rich in ink color, with gradually changing lines that create distinct layers, leaving room for emotions and allowing the tester to create their own story, while showcasing the charm of light and texture.

The ink painting perfectly blends the texture of paper particles with the delicate scent of white musk, symbolizing the fragrance of rice. It corresponds to the long history of the raw material of paper with its delicate striped sandalwood scent. The gently spreading ink strokes, like the shy grass with its fragrant and agile aroma, bring a delicate and soft atmosphere, and showcase its unique personality.
During the fragrance blending process, perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin starts with grains and focuses on using sesame and its roasted extracts. Thoughts and senses leave imprints on paper, and she describes the perfume as the finished product of a book, consisting of a story, an introduction, a structure, and a mixture of various ingredients that echo the entire narrative.
Fabrice Pellegrin said, “My goal is to echo the new ink fragrance in this perfume and give it a delicate and delicious texture. I sublimate the entire composition with musky notes to enhance the sensory experience. The following notes of mimosa are dominated by an elegant powdery scent, complementing the soft fragrance of paper. The unique combination of cereal and ink fragrance with the fragrance of white musk ultimately forms this L’Eau Papier paper fragrance perfume. I strive to interpret the delicate and exquisite olfactory sensation when ink touches paper, supplemented by musky scent.”
