WOAW Gallery presents American artist Chris Regner’s first solo exhibition in Asia, “Careers in the Arts.” This exhibition showcases a series of self-deprecating paintings that reflect Regner’s perspective as an artist, exploring his self-identity and struggles in the contemporary art world. The exhibition will be on display at the gallery’s Central space from February 21, 2024, to March 20, featuring 9 pieces created by him this year.
Regner’s first exhibition in Asia at WOAW Gallery in Hong Kong focuses on creating a series of self-deprecating works. Following his solo exhibition in 2021 where he explored the dilemma of male pride in the absence of good role models, this exhibition delves into the identity of being an artist. Creating works in solitude in this era, driven and constrained by contemporary realities and personal and universal human conditions, he examines the challenges and sacrifices that come with choosing to pursue an artistic career.
Regner’s visual language is now more vivid and bold, creating a clearer distance between the way of showing or not showing through its rigid plastic appearance and inner emotions to the world. In “Future Planning” (2024), the most obvious interest lies in the ongoing conflict between expressing oneself, managing a career, and meeting social or family needs. Through a friendly and interesting picture, this painting presents an artist in a solemn atmosphere, immersed in a calm, meditative posture, disturbed by the worries of real life.
