1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair announces its collaboration with Christie’s Hong Kong to present the exhibition “1-54 Presents: Coalescent Lights” to promote the works of African and African diaspora contemporary artists. The exhibition will run from March 26 to 30, 2024. This marks the first exhibition held by 1-54 Fair in Asia as part of the 1-54 Presents program. The program includes a series of 1-54 exhibitions showcasing works created by multiple artists around specific themes, with the first 1-54 exhibition already held in London in October 2023.
The “Coalescent Lights” exhibition held at Christie’s Hong Kong spans multiple generations of artists, curated by Kami Gahiga, exploring the diverse creative techniques and aesthetic concepts of contemporary African art in a poetic manner. The exhibition highlights outstanding artists who have previously exhibited their works at various art fairs around the world, including artists who have never exhibited in Asia before.
The exhibiting artists include Omar Ba, Virginia Chihota, Sanaa Gateja, Abdoulaye Konaté, Ibrahim Mahama, Zanele Muholi, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Moffat Takadiwa, Ouattara Watts, and others. The exhibition references the perspective of French-Cameroonian curator Simon Njami, who advocates for a delicate presentation of contemporary African art and acknowledges the interdisciplinary nature of such works. He believes that contemporary art has multiple facets, constantly evolving, and not limited by traditional classifications.
