Just in time for its two-year anniversary, the West Kowloon Cultural District’s M+ Museum has recently announced its lineup of programs for 2024. These include major exhibitions, commissioned works for the M+ facade, and theater programs, covering various fields such as visual arts, design and architecture, moving images, photography, and fashion. Take a look at the highlights below!
// “Echoes of the Mountains and Waters” Exhibition //
This exhibition showcases selected works from the M+ collection, exploring the complex connection between landscapes and humanity in a post-industrial and increasingly virtual world. The exhibition features fascinating works by different artists such as Liu Chuang, Guo Hongwei, Ruan Chunshi, Yokoo Tadanori, Tang Jiawei, Vivian Wang, Xu Bing, Yang Jiechang, and Zao Wou-Ki.

// “Black and White: Photography Narratives” Exhibition //
This exhibition is M+’s first photography-focused exhibition, in collaboration with the French May Arts Festival and co-curated with the National Library of France (BnF). It showcases works from 1915 to 2019, including internationally renowned photographers such as Man Ray, Diane Arbus, Mario Giacomelli, and Robert Frank.

// “Ieoh Ming Pei: Life as Architecture” Exhibition //
The first major retrospective exhibition of the renowned Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei (1917-2019). Pei’s illustrious career spanned seventy years and included notable architectural projects such as the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong and the modernization of the Louvre Museum in Paris. This exhibition will showcase a series of new commissioned photographs by a new generation of photographers, presenting Pei’s iconic works as well as lesser-known buildings. Participating photographers include Ho Siu-nam, Kubota Naho, and Lee Kwok-man. Additionally, M+ has collaborated with the architecture schools of the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong to create models showcasing Pei’s completed and unrealized projects.

// “Li Mingwei: The Blossoming Voice” Exhibition //
The performance installation created by artist Li Mingwei is a live performance piece. “Blossoming Voice” is sung live by professional vocalists for museum visitors, offering them a delightful gift. Li Mingwei once took care of his mother during her recovery after surgery, and both of them found solace in Schubert’s music. “Blossoming Voice” was inspired by this experience.

// “Awe: Rainbow Rainbow Rainbow” Exhibition //
Focusing on the special exhibition of Akio’s work, this Japanese artist is known as the “Rainbow Artist” because of his signature rainbow patterns. He developed a unique artistic language during both the post-World War II period and the subsequent wave of avant-garde movements.

//M+ Theater “Beijing, Like a Misty Memory”//
In response to the ongoing exhibition “Song Huaigui: Art Pioneer and Fashion Mother” until April next year, M+ Theater will present “Beijing, A Past Like Smoke,” screening Bernardo Bertolucci’s “The Last Emperor, Puyi.” The program will feature blockbuster films and independent movies, exploring the depiction of Beijing in film and understanding the diverse aspects of Beijing culture and the vibrant lives of local residents. Additionally, a series of documentaries will be screened, highlighting the significant impact of the fashion industry on Chinese society.

//M+ New Work “ETC” in Curtain Wall//
Commissioned jointly by M+ and Tai Kwun Contemporary, the new work “ETC” (2023) by American artist Sarah Morris, born in 1967, captures the essence of Hong Kong with a cinematic lens and will be showcased on the M+ facade in the evening.
