Art is a creative process that allows for self-expression, choice, and results. SC Gallery, located in Wong Chuk Hang, will soon hold a joint exhibition called “FREESTYLE Women,” showcasing the works of four young female artists. They include Nobody here, Xu Xuehui, Cao Yingqi, and Wu Yanlin.
As the name suggests, the theme of this exhibition is freestyle, allowing four artists to freely express themselves. Among them, the artist Nobody here has created a series of works called “hän,” exploring the freedom of gender and social roles. She believes that people should not be classified and mentions that some languages have neutral pronouns, such as the Finnish word “hän,” which can refer to not only males or females but also various statuses and identities.
Xu Xuehui draws inspiration from her personal life and memories to create works that depict loneliness and selfhood. She uses slightly distorted body movements and bright colors to convey emotions and experiences. Cao Yingqi’s works depict the beautiful things in the people around her, providing energy for important communities. She showcases scenes such as two generations of mothers picking summer fruits and girls examining each other’s bodies, nurturing each other in a free-spirited manner.
As for Wu Yanlin’s creations revolving around history and memory, she hopes to establish intimate relationships between people through painting and respond to future uncertainties. In the exhibition, there are two works titled “Summer Swing” and “Midnight Bebop,” inspired by improvised jazz music and dance styles. The other two works, “A Child Growing Flowers in the 1970s” and “Celebration of Morning Dew,” are inspired by songs from the 1970s in Korea, presenting images of freedom and hope.
