This year marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of JPS Gallery in Hong Kong. To celebrate, the gallery is hosting a series of events and has specially invited American artist Barminski to exhibit his first installment, “Moon Lands On Man.” The exhibition begins with an immersive cardboard toy store, which appears to be a whimsical dreamland but hides a satirical conspiracy behind the moon landing program. The sugar-coating conceals the invisible reality.

Artist Barminski is known for his paper sculpture art. In this exhibition, he presents an installation piece using a model of a toy store made out of cardboard. The work expresses the idea that what may appear to be a whimsical dreamland actually hides a satirical conspiracy theory about the moon landing, with the sugar coating representing the invisible reality.

Barminski describes the cardboard artworks in the exhibition as both real and fake, depending on what you expect. If you believe you are holding a real Star Wars toy, then it is fake. But if you see it as an artwork, then it is real. Everyone has a utopia-like toyland in their hearts, but various social issues still deserve our attention and insight into the truth. Barminski uses dark humor to make people think about the truth hidden behind reality and falsehood.
