Art Basel 2023 Must-Visit! Mika Ninagawa Collaborates with Shangri-La for an Art Garden

To celebrate the annual Hong Kong Art Month, Island Shangri-La collaborates with renowned Japanese photographer and film director Mika Ninagawa, as a representative of the Japanese art scene, to create an art installation with the theme “Travel with Us to Find Your Shangri-La”. The installation will make its debut at the Island Shangri-La Lounge during the Hong Kong Basel Art Fair from March 23rd to 25th. The artwork combines Mika Ninagawa’s creative vitality with the concept of Shangri-La, offering the audience a unique and immersive art experience that is truly captivating.

Created by Mika Ninagawa and Shangri-La, the art installation called “Butterflies’ Seasons” takes viewers on a journey through the seasons from the perspective of colorful butterflies. The design combines vibrant colors and blooming floral elements, symbolizing a diverse future and endless vitality. It leads the audience to traverse between dreams and reality, embarking on a multi-dimensional visual journey.

About Mika Ninagawa

To celebrate the annual Hong Kong Art Month, Island Shangri La collaborates with renowned Japanese photographer and filmmaker Mika Ninagawa, who is a representative figure in the Japanese art scene. The art installation, titled “Travel with Us, Find Your Shangri-La,” primarily focuses on photography, as well as film, video, and spatial installations. Mika Ninagawa has received numerous awards, including the Kimura Ihei Photography Award, and published her book with Rizzoli N.Y. in 2010. She has also directed five feature films, including “Helter Skelter” (2012) and “Diner” (2019), as well as the Netflix original series “Followers.” Her new book, “Flowers, Glowing Light,” will be released in 2022.
