In 2022, it seems like everyone is trapped in a dark and stagnant time, plagued by the pandemic, lockdowns, high inflation, economic decline, and the Russia-Ukraine war. How much longer do we have to wait to see a glimmer of hope? The central hall of Central Plaza in Central transforms into a kaleidoscope-like time tunnel, where light and shadows refract and illusions intertwine, leading you into the inner world of contemporary artist Hu Rong, who created during the period of the pandemic lockdown.

“A Glimmer in a Corner” exhibition is an extension of Hu Rong’s “Kaleidoscope” solo exhibition held at the Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2017. The “Kaleidoscope” series opens a colorful new chapter in Hu Rong’s artistic creation, reflecting the ever-changing scenes through the kaleidoscope effect and revealing the diversity and infinite changes of the world. The abundant beauty and profound emotions in her works remain consistent.

This exhibition showcases 28 important works by the artist, including 19 oil paintings and 9 sculptures, providing a comprehensive display of her artistic journey in recent years. The exhibition is titled “A Glimmer of Light” and aims to bring back long-lost positive energy to the audience. Through chapters on “Humanity,” “Adversity,” “Love,” and “Light,” Ms. Hu Rong shares how she views challenges in life as opportunities for growth and how love awakens the power to overcome adversity.

The artist uses apples as a symbol throughout the entire series. Although youthful, it signifies a philosophy of contentment and simplicity in life, which is more relevant in the current social environment than the mysterious fantasies behind René Magritte’s green apple.

Ms. Hu Rong has worked, studied, and lived in multiple countries, bringing a unique perspective that combines Eastern and Western influences. With her profound artistic accomplishments, she has created a series of vibrant works that are close to life and capture the pulse of society. Through her keen observation, she expresses the simple and pure beauty of life. Her works are like diaries, filled with colorful hues, clean lines, and sincere emotions, reminding us to be grateful for the beauty in life.

At the beginning of the year, Ms. Hu Rong said to curator Fang Yuanming, “This is an extension of my ‘Kaleidoscope’ series, recording my hopes for the future. Although we cannot change the scenery ahead, we can adjust our mindset. Even if we cannot see the brilliance of the kaleidoscope at the moment, as long as we keep moving forward, there will definitely be light ahead.”
