VILLEPIN will hold Marie de Villepin’s first solo exhibition in Asia this week, inspired by a phenomenon of bird migration to protect themselves as a group; during specific seasons, they escape threats from predators through collective behavior of vocalization and shape-shifting. The artist, through a multifaceted artistic practice resembling the movement of bird flocks, captures the transformation of colors, shapes, and rhythms, uncovering the energy hidden in nature and different environments.
For artists, the canvas is not just a medium for traditional painting, but also a space that encompasses all things. She discards the inherent symbolic meanings, blends harmonious colors, and splashes her diverse thoughts and personal experiences on the canvas. Marie spent most of her early years in places like the United States and India, before moving to Los Angeles to focus on painting. Through her experiences of living in different places, she records world landscapes through her creations, while also easing her anxiety about cultural identity.
Artists draw inspiration from various eras and states, exploring the relationships between different spaces. The paintings are outlined in abstract forms as a changing field, and after shifting and dissecting layers of colors, various shapes emerge in the space, guiding viewers to discover unknown inner feelings.
Music plays a key role in Marie’s creations, with rhythmic strokes sometimes spreading out and sometimes converging. Through painting, she creates imagined landscapes, creatures, and more, with a style that oscillates between the concrete and the abstract. Her artwork combines formal aesthetics with her own experiences, leading viewers on a journey of self-awareness.
Just like the changing shape of a flock of birds, “Scatter · Gather” will start with Marie de Villepin’s work and gradually evolve. In addition to the paintings, the exhibition also tells the artist’s personal experiences and sources of inspiration, involving art, music, film, and photography that inspire her artistic creation, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in a fluid audiovisual journey.
