Léi Wèi Gé brings the first Asian exhibition of African-American interdisciplinary artist Derrick Adams to local audiences in November, presenting 7 new paintings using his signature collage, fragmentation, and formal synthesis techniques to create joyful images of Black culture!

Adams resides in the United States and works there. In his highly productive artistic career, he has worked in a wide range of media, including painting, collage, sculpture, performing arts, sketching, and film production. He often depicts fragmented surfaces and bold colors in his work, embracing popular culture and focusing on the African American community in the United States. He has created a large number of portraits and everyday life scenes with Black themes, introducing a multifaceted image of Black people to the public.

In this exhibition, the main focus is on the artist’s series of portraits of family and friends. He depicts his family members, peers, friends, and characters encountered in daily life in his iconic cubist style, with the characters characterized by blocks of color and dimension, creating lively and vivid images. As an artist with a mature and unique visual language, Adams takes a more liberated approach in these new works, providing a grander narrative landscape for his pieces, showcasing the rich and diverse lives of black individuals beyond stereotypes.

These works are partially inspired by family members’ photos. The work “Sister Cousins” (2022) embodies a strong and warm sense of reunion between two embracing women. Another double portrait “Ating” (2022) depicts an acquaintance of the artist. Additionally, the artist even features two African women he met at the opening of the 2020 London Adams exhibition, showcasing stories of different images of the Black community in his work.
