This September, Hong Kong Sotheby’s is pleased to present “Yamaguchi Akira: Intuitive Mastery,” the first solo exhibition of this Japanese artist based in New York in Hong Kong. This exhibition will feature 15 brand new works by Yamaguchi Akira for the first time, blending street culture, music, art, and elements of Japanese aesthetics, including the artist’s iconic series such as “Mobius,” “Beyond Boundaries,” “Shadow Blocks,” “Reinterpretation,” and “Untitled.”
The inspiration for this exhibition comes from the albums “In My Element” and “Black Radio 2” by the renowned jazz pianist Robert Glasper, a Grammy Award winner who blends hip-hop, classical, pop, and street elements to create a unique jazz style. Similarly, Yamaguchi Hikaru combines art with street culture using an integrated creative approach, shaping a distinctive visual language. With his unique brushstroke style, the artist transcends the boundaries of painting and abstract art, creating sculptural-like pieces.
To explore more possibilities in painting, Yamaguchi Hikaru uses splashes of color, highly tensioned, and colorful abstract techniques to bring new expressions to traditional brushwork. Just as the Gutai master Shiraga Kazuo used his feet to paint to explore the relationship between the body and material, Yamaguchi Hikaru also pursues a free and unrestrained brushstroke form, longing to break free from the limitations of flat creation.
Yamaguchi Reki uses wood cutting techniques to create his “Shadow Blocks” series. Drawing inspiration from Japanese calligraphy, along with vibrant urban culture and trendy elements, he reshapes traditional abstract expressionism to create three-dimensional collage works.
Regarding this exhibition, Yamaguchi Hiroshi said: “‘At Ease’ embodies my creative journey, my work goes beyond the canvas frame, integrating street culture and art as one. I am very pleased to have the opportunity to curate an exhibition that truly represents myself, incorporating all styles and inspirations, and sharing my new works with Sotheby’s collectors.”
