When admiring artworks, are you interested in delving into the stories behind them, in addition to being captivated by the immediate visual imagery of the pieces? Hong Kong artist Jessica Ng from Australia, has always pondered whether every artwork has its own story behind it, or if as viewers, we need to create our own stories. Eventually, she began painting a fairy tale world full of endless possibilities, hoping that through her work, she could arouse curiosity in everyone and allow the audience to construct their own unique stories from it.
Recently, Quiet Gallery will present the artist’s first solo exhibition, featuring a series of canvas acrylic paintings created by Jessica in the past two years, as well as launching peripheral products, allowing the audience to personally experience her fairy tale world of characters Estelle and her companions.
The protagonist of this exhibition, Estelle, is a little girl wearing a mask, full of adventurous spirit. The mask brings her a sense of security and confidence to blend into her surroundings. During her journey, she encounters many different creatures, some encounters are brief, some are long-lasting, but inevitably there will be times of parting. Estelle will store these memories in the stars she collects, and the stars will come to life as her travel companions, constantly reminding her of precious memories of the past.
Jessica’s work depicts a whimsical sense of innocence while also showcasing themes of loneliness and darkness. Her created world is filled with anthropomorphic creatures and characters with black eyes, drawing inspiration from fairy tales, fantasy stories, Western cartoons, and Japanese animation, combined with her childhood memories and experiences.
Audiences can not only delve into the artist’s whimsical ideas through their works but also add their own imagination to create a unique fantasy world!
