As we step into the end of the year, major galleries are also beginning to prepare for winter exhibitions to welcome Christmas and the New Year. The international gallery Hauser & Wirth recently announced new exhibitions in Europe and Asia, with rich program content in each city. The Hong Kong gallery will even launch a solo exhibition by fashion photographer Annie Leibovitz in January next year, showcasing her early photography collection, setting the tone for the gallery’s 2022 events!
Starting from January 6th, Hauser & Wirth Hong Kong will host the exhibition “Annie Leibovitz: Early Years, 1970-1983 and Wonderland Journey,” showcasing a comprehensive selection of the artist’s early photography works personally curated, as well as a collection of iconic fashion photography works from the past two decades.
Annie Leibovitz is a world-renowned portrait photographer who became the chief photographer for Rolling Stone in 1973, collecting 142 covers and shooting photos for dozens of feature stories, including the 1975 Rolling Stones tour, before leaving the magazine.
She has photographed countless celebrities and stars, but the most notable is the last portrait of John Lennon. This portrait was created on December 8, 1980, where the naked Lennon tightly holds onto Yoko Ono, symbolizing the intimacy of their relationship. Lennon was shot hours after the photo was taken, making this image a powerful visual memorial.
Annie Leibovitz is prolific and innovative in her photography, holding a unique position in the 20th-century American portrait art tradition. These rarely seen early works trace Leibovitz’s photography career, capturing the cultural trends and political upheavals of the 1970s to the early 1980s. These images are powerful, showcasing Leibovitz’s unique creative ability to combine portrait and documentary photography techniques with profound humanistic concerns.
The exhibition will also feature a series of fashion photographs commissioned from artists. In the words of the photographer, these photos “unexpectedly reveal the path to portrait art,” showcasing the depth and breadth of her artistic vision through fashion, landscapes, and interior scenes from a new perspective. From culture, film, and photographic history to the long tradition of traditional portraiture in art history – this collection of works integrates Leibovitz’s rich visual elements, definitely not to be missed!
