The first Tokyo Art Week will be held in November! Can it challenge Hong Kong to become the number one in contemporary art in Asia?

The art scene in Tokyo has always been vibrant, especially in the development of contemporary art. Artists like Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, Chiharu Shiota, Motohiko Odani, and Chiho Aoshima have gained international recognition. In order to showcase Japan’s creativity and diversity in contemporary art to the world, the Japanese Contemporary Art Platform and the Contemporary Art Dealers Association of Japan (CADAN) will host the first Tokyo Art Week in November this year, leading global audiences to discover the strong potential of local art in an innovative way!

Because the event covers the entire city, Tokyo Art Week is considered the most ambitious contemporary art event in Tokyo to date. Over the course of four days of original projects and activities, the organizers will collaborate with over 50 top galleries, museums, and other art spaces to bring a rich artistic experience to the entire city of Tokyo.

In addition, during the event, local artists will also be selected to present special new creations, and the Art Mobile project will be planned. At that time, there will be special buses to lead visitors to visit museums and art galleries in the city, or specially designed city tours. This all-in-one service attracts everyone to actively explore the architecture, design, fashion, food, and nightlife of the city, definitely increasing the public’s participation in the city’s art scene!

In order to connect with international audiences, the organizers will hold educational programs during the art week focusing on dialogue and art history, led by the curator group and alternative art education organization Arts Initiative Tokyo (AIT), and conducted in the form of online discussions, allowing the event to reach an international audience. In addition to promoting local culture and art, it can also draw inspiration from others’ opinions.

Due to the global pandemic, this year’s Tokyo Art Week is seen as a trial run, mainly laying the groundwork for the official launch in 2022. The Art Week will take place from November 4th to 7th, with a rich preliminary schedule of events released. However, more details about the activities are yet to be announced, so please stay tuned!
