In recent years, actively supporting the arts and culture, La Prairie recently announced its sponsorship of a major exhibition “Women in abstraction” at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, featuring over 500 different forms of works including plastic arts, dance, photography, film, and decorative arts, reexamining the history of abstract art originating from the 1980s in an original way, while paying tribute to a group of female artists.
The exhibition “Women in Abstraction,” supported by La Prairie, is currently being held at the Pompidou Center in Paris until August 23. Curated by the Director Christine Macel and Deputy Director of Photography Karolina Lewandowska, after years of research, works by nearly 110 modernist female artists such as Hilma Af Klint, Verena Loewensberg, Joan Mitchell, Judy Chicago, Shirley Jaffe, Barbara Hepworth, and Fahrelnissa Zeid were selected. This exhibition aims to introduce overlooked female artists from around the world to the public, restore their reputation, and elevate the status of female artists.
These female artists not only possess a bold and forward-looking vision, but have also inspired some of the most representative male artists in abstract art movements such as Mondrian and Malevitch. In addition to celebrating a group of female artists, this exhibition also rethinks the history of abstract art through expressions beyond painting, such as spirituality, science, decorative arts, and dance.
Through this first-time collaboration, La Prairie also announced a long-term partnership with the Pompido Center to continue fulfilling the brand’s social responsibility and support for art and culture. The venue for this exhibition, the Pompido Center, also houses a large number of art pieces by Niki de Saint Phalle, the French female artist who has always pursued social, racial, and gender equality through her work. The large retrospective exhibition “Niki de Saint Phalle, Structures for Life” at MoMA PS1 in New York also received support from La Prairie.
Another noteworthy point is that Niki de Saint Phalle’s art pieces resonate uniquely with La Prairie. She often uses the cobalt blue color symbolizing “joy and luck” in her paintings, which is also the inspiration for the color theme of La Prairie’s Caviar Essence Collection, representing the connection between the brand and art.
