When mentioning the Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali, everyone will think of his masterpiece “The Melting Clock”, in which a distorted melting clock is used to depict the contours of time. Recently, contemporary artist Mr. Likey from New York held an exhibition with the theme “Melt Like Dali” at 13a New Street Art Gallery, blending different popular characters for a new creation!
Mr. Likey’s creations are deeply influenced by American cartoons and street culture, excelling in using different trendy symbols as elements to create entirely new artistic works. He has exhibited in New York, Australia, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, the Philippines, and has been invited to be a featured artist at the 2019 Shanghai Urban Culture Expo “Innersect”.
At the “Melt Like Dali” original artwork exhibition, Mr. Likey dissolves all creative elements and artistic veins, then combines them together, while incorporating elements from famous artworks, such as turning Dali’s “The Melting Clock” into melting donuts, giving the painting multiple layers of meaning and adding a humorous style. Additionally, it is easy to see his expression of “painting within a painting,” showcasing a unique worldview in different contexts, allowing people to feel a different idea behind the beautiful symbolism, resonating with them.
The exhibition highlights also include a brand new work concept of “Basketball card”, inspired by last year’s Michael Jordan classic Basketball card selling at a sky-high price in the auction market, the report caught Mr. Likey’s attention, leading to the creation of interesting artworks.
It is also worth mentioning that Mr. Likey’s Basquiat mouse collection received a great response last year, being very popular at exhibitions in Hong Kong and Taiwan, with the entire series sold out. For this exhibition, he has brought a brand new Basquiat Mouse series, so if you are interested, remember to seize the opportunity to appreciate it up close.
