In addition to the “Kusama: Cosmic Nature” exhibition held at the New York Botanical Garden and the large retrospective exhibition “Yayoi Kusama: A Retrospective” at the Gropius Bau Museum in Berlin, contemporary Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama also welcomed her latest exhibition “Midway Between Mystery and Symbol: Yayoi Kusama’s Monochrome” at the Yayoi Kusama Museum in Tokyo this month, featuring works with a monochrome theme!
“The Polka Dot Queen” in her early years of creation, has drawn many monochromatic works. In this exhibition “Between Mystery and Symbol: Yayoi Kusama’s Monochrome,” you can appreciate the monochromatic “Infinity Net” series. As one of Yayoi Kusama’s iconic works, I believe everyone is familiar with her “Infinity Net.” The works exhibited this time were created in New York in 1959, using white, silver, and gold monochromatic tones and continuously extending circular patterns to create an immersive artistic effect.
Additionally, there is Yayoi Kusama’s “Self-portrait” created in 1995, this monochromatic “self-portrait” is created with polka dots, resembling an abstract painting; and the 2019 work “Stairway To Heaven”, only using black and white colors, resembling a unique ink painting, its patterns also evoke images of wriggling insects.
Yayoi Kusama’s new work “My Eternal Soul” is also a highlight of this exhibition. This series of works is created in monochrome, full of abstract and mysterious feelings, just like the name of this exhibition.
Although under the epidemic, there is no chance to fly to Japan in person to appreciate the exhibition, but you can still feel the unique immersive art experience brought by the “Polka Dot Queen” Yayoi Kusama from the photos!
