Formula One racing is a competition of speed, and New York artist Michael Kagan captures the figures speeding on the racetrack through his paintings. He recently held his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong titled “It’s Never Over” at Over the Influence Hong Kong, focusing on six legendary Formula One drivers: Aryton Senna, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, and Michael Schumacher.
The artist searched for the most outstanding Formula 1 drivers of all time and ranked them based on their winning data, finally selecting these 6 legendary drivers as the subjects of tribute. Among them, Aryton Senna and Niki Lauda have passed away; Michael Schumacher also retired after a near-fatal skiing accident in 2013. These drivers each have fascinating stories and achievements that are widely talked about, and Michael Kagan hopes to continue their spirit through his artwork, inspiring the next generation of drivers.
He used his iconic tight composition to draw portraits of several drivers, with Niki Lauda’s portrait based on a personal photo given to Kagan by his son. The image exudes tension in stillness, showcasing the drivers’ perseverance in pushing limits, just as Kagan never erases any strokes in his creation, hoping to use his artistic intuition and instinct to explore the boundary between control and chaos.
