Calling all Hayao Miyazaki fans! The upcoming Oscar Movie Museum opening next year will feature the first Hayao Miyazaki retrospective exhibition!

Due to the pandemic, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, USA, was unable to open as scheduled in 2019 and had to be postponed until April of the following year. However, there is exciting news recently that the first major exhibition after the opening of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be a retrospective of the works of Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki, marking his first exhibition in North America!

This exhibition of Hayao Miyazaki is curated by the director of the Oscar Movie Museum, Jessica Niebel, and assistant director J. Raul Guzman, in collaboration with the Japanese Studio Ghibli. It is displayed in the Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery within the museum. The exhibition is divided into 7 sections based on different themes of Miyazaki’s works, designed as a unique “journey” to guide visitors step by step into Miyazaki’s animated world. Visitors will follow the footsteps of Mei, the 4-year-old girl character from the animated film “My Neighbor Totoro,” passing through Totoro’s “tree hole” to enter the exhibition hall, providing a delightful viewing experience.

The exhibition will bring more than 300 items from 11 Hayao Miyazaki animations, including storyboards, posters, character designs, scripts, background paintings, etc., including “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” “Castle in the Sky,” “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” “Princess Mononoke,” “Porco Rosso,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” and of course, the Oscar-winning “Spirited Away” in 2003. This allows everyone to review many of Miyazaki’s classic works at once, with some of the upcoming exhibits never before seen overseas, making them quite precious.

A must-see exhibit at the exhibition, including a 256-page catalog, allows everyone to gain a deeper understanding of Hayao Miyazaki and his animations. In this catalog, you can see the production materials of Miyazaki’s early TV works and films, the animation techniques used, and Miyazaki’s creative ideas.

In addition, the Oscar Film Museum will also screen films by Hayao Miyazaki in Japanese and English versions in the theater, and the gift shop in the museum will also release peripheral products during the exhibition period, which is definitely good news for fans of Hayao Miyazaki! After the epidemic, come to this museum to pay homage and visit the exhibition!
