Relive the once-thriving taxi culture of Hong Kong! The iconic Canton Disco from the 80s makes a surprising debut at The M+ Shop.

When it comes to the nightlife in Hong Kong in the 1980s, the vibrant culture of disco was essential. In 1985, Canton Disco, located on Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, attracted a crowd of music enthusiasts and party-goers, including famous stars like Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, and Danny Chan.

Andrew Bull

One of the co-founders, Andrew Bull, collaborated with various creative units in Hong Kong at that time: Kenneth Ko was responsible for interior design, Chen Yau-kin was responsible for brand image and product design, and Illustration Workshop was responsible for illustrations, bringing the trendy charm of Canton Disco to the young and fashionable crowd. It was also because of its outstanding visual image that Canton Disco became one of the most representative and fashionable entertainment venues in Hong Kong in the 1980s.

Several well-known foreign bands such as Swing Out Sister, New Order, The Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue, etc., have also performed on stage at Canton Disco.

Renowned designer Alan Chan was involved in the logo and visual identity design for Canton Disco. The iconic swimming logo was inspired by a 1930s cigarette card from Alan’s personal collection, and it was created with a striking contrast of green and black to create a distinctive visual image.

Alan Chan Creations brings a limited-time exhibition store to The M+ Shop, taking inspiration from Canton Disco. With Canton Disco’s distinctive swimming logo and green as the pop-up theme, it showcases a series of vintage lifestyle products such as coasters, menus, VIP cards, stationery, etc. Alan also publicly shares part of his personal collection of Canton Disco archives, allowing everyone to relive the brilliance of the disco culture of that era through old items.

It is worth noting that Alan, in collaboration with the Hong Kong 3D Printing Association, has created a large-scale diving art sculpture that interprets the swimmers on the Canton Disco logo in a modern way, paying tribute to the classics. They have also launched a limited edition collection of “Dive For It” art models in 10 different materials, with each design limited to 10 pieces. Various reissued fashion and lifestyle products such as coasters, glass cups, nostalgic snack boxes, beach towels, tees, tote bags, and badges are also available for sale at the event. Why not come to the venue in person and relive the glorious era of disco culture?
