Architectural design directly influences the landscape of a city. In contemporary society, many countries not only consider the practicality of a building when planning it, but also care about its appearance. As we enter 2023, there will be several unique buildings around the world that are about to be completed. Here are a few selected ones for everyone’s introduction!
Tirana Pyramid (Balkan Peninsula – Albania)
The MVRDV project “Tirana Pyramid” is located in Albania, on the southwestern Balkan Peninsula, and construction began two years ago. By transforming the museum built in 1988 to commemorate the communist dictator Enver Hoxha, the designers have turned the originally rugged architecture into a brand new cultural and artistic space in the shape of a pyramid. While preserving the original concrete shell, the courtyard and surrounding environment have become more spacious and open. Inside, there are cafes, studios, and various lifestyle shops, making it the latest leisure destination in the area.
Beijing Sub-Center Library (Beijing, China)
Snøhetta won the international design competition in 2018 with the “Beijing Sub-Center Library” project. This project aims to create a modern space for learning and sharing knowledge in the Beijing Sub-Center area. Unlike the quiet atmosphere of a typical library, this design with a touch of modernism makes visitors feel like they are in a forest canopy, providing a refreshing experience. In addition, the building is covered by a 16-meter-high glass curtain wall, allowing natural light to pour in and creating a leisurely atmosphere.
Gild Center (United States)
Studio Gang has created a new facility for the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City – the Richard Gilder Science Education and Innovation Center, which has been included in the “Future Project – Culture” category of the 2019 World Architecture Festival. This project aims to encourage different visitors to explore the mysteries of the scientific world. The building has a striking cave-like design, with sleek geometric lines that make it stand out among many museums. Even before its official completion, it has already attracted many people to come and see it due to its innovative and unique design.
Toranomon-Azabudai (Tokyo, Japan)
Renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick brings his first design project to Japan, injecting vitality into the heart of Tokyo with this massive green multi-purpose center. Inside, you’ll find facilities such as shops, hotels, a spa center, and even a learning center. It is expected to officially debut in early spring this year! The building aims to blend nature with urban architecture, so the designers have created an irregularly shaped plot, resembling a small hill in the city.
National Library of Israel (Israel)
This building has a grand and magnificent curved exterior, covered in limestone, with a circular atrium running through it, surrounded by fluctuating bookshelves and study spaces. The architect aimed to create a cultural space in Jerusalem that both echoes traditional architecture and reflects contemporary urban characteristics. It is said that this library houses the largest collection of Hebrew and Jewish documents in the world, including many rare manuscripts, books, and artifacts.
