The latest residential building Sluishuis in Amsterdam, Netherlands, has recently been completed. This building appears to float on the water, taking on a unique geometric shape. A large hollow triangle in the middle directs water into the building courtyard. When residents look out the window, they will enjoy a sea view, as if living on a cruise ship sailing on the sea. The scenery is very pleasant!
This waterfront residence is designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and Barcode Architects. Amsterdam is known for its canals and water views, and Sluishuis continues the city’s advantages, located at the intersection of water, rural landscapes, and the city in the residential area of IJburg. It fully embodies the concept of living on the water, with a different appearance from every angle. Facing the water, the building’s large openings bring the lake into the courtyard, providing sunlight and beautiful views for the interior apartments.
Sluishuis offers 442 apartments, as well as public facilities such as a panoramic platform and a sailing school. A long corridor winds around the building, extending all the way into the water, creating an archipelago with houses, educational and entertainment facilities, and floating gardens. In addition, the buildings facing the street are designed like terraced fields, and people can climb up the narrow stairs in the middle to the roof to enjoy the surrounding scenery, sometimes even seeing boats passing by the lake.
The design team chose natural materials to ensure that the appearance of the building can remain in optimal condition over time. They used untreated aluminum facades to reflect the water surface, giving the building a different appearance under different times and lighting conditions. In contrast, the stepped roof terrace and pier promenade are made of wood, giving a warm and smooth touch. In addition, solar panels are installed on the roof of Sluishuis, embodying sustainable concepts.
This unique architectural design has become the latest local landmark, opening up new possibilities for waterfront living. Next time you visit this city, be sure to check it out!
