When you mention “Sham Shui Po,” do you immediately think of buying electronic products at the computer center, checking in at hipster cafes, or exploring the streets to discover treasures in unique cultural and vintage shops? These are undoubtedly great activities to do in Sham Shui Po, but if you recently took a stroll down Tong Chau Street, you would have noticed that this community has quietly transformed into an eye-catching punk style! This “future city” is actually part of the three-year creative tourism development project “Design District Hong Kong” initiated by the Hong Kong Design Centre in 2018, in line with the theme of “transFORM Metamorphosis” for 2020/21, hosting the “Digital Punk Express” creative fashion event!
In order to explore the diverse cultural community of Sham Shui Po in a new way, “#ddHK Design #Hong Kong Land” collaborates with various sectors such as fashion design, animation illustration, 3D digital art, and interactive theater performances to give the temporary street market on Tung Chau Street in Sham Shui Po a whole new look! The event venue is like a highly realistic movie scene, with colorful neon lights creating a futuristic feel, making you feel like you are in a mysterious future world. You can not only enter the surreal “Girl Sci-Fi Room” and “Otaku Digital Room,” but also interact with the half-human, half-mechanical “future characters”!
“#ddHK Design# Hong Kong” also intentionally collaborated with 10 unique local shops to create a street design gallery, showcasing a series of digital punk outfits specially designed by 10 local fashion and accessory designers for this project! The designs incorporate materials that are both characteristic of Sham Shui Po and unexpectedly unique, such as electronic components commonly found on Apliu Street and leather from Tai Nan Street. Additionally, some designers have combined Miao culture with digital punk to bring a fashionable surprise to everyone! Among these 10 sets of designs, limited edition 3D models have been created and will be available for sale at weekend markets and designated stores during the event. All 100 pieces are locally made in Hong Kong, and once sold out, they will not be restocked. Don’t miss out if you love models and fashion!
Everyone can also follow the guided tour to embark on a super sensory adventure journey! Starting from the exhibition store “He She” resembling a robot transformation factory, heading to the temporary street market on Tongzhou Street, along the way passing through two “fashion supply stations” – “Lian Chang Leather” and “ED Warehouse”. Here, you can enjoy a fashion experience theater staged on weekends, where Australian multimedia artist Missy will remotely lead models, dancers, and performers to immerse everyone in this community filled with a surreal science fiction atmosphere!
In addition to appreciating fashion creations and performances, there are also a series of exhibitions, lectures, workshops on different themes, mini art shops, etc. The West Kowloon Corridor Bridge Pillars outside the temporary street market on Tung Chau Street, as well as the exquisite wall paintings on the exterior walls of Sham Shui Po Phase 1 and Phase 2 Sewage Screening Plants, are also must-visit hotspots!
During the event period, the public will also be invited to become time travelers to complete a series of missions and receive gifts. One, take photos in the main event area and surrounding partner stores, upload them to your personal social account, and then follow the official game rules to complete the tagging steps for a chance to win a limited edition model gift box; two, five digital punk “hearts” are hidden in the scenes of SSP CITY, find and take a photo of them, the first 30 people to complete this mission each day will receive a gift; three, in addition, visitors wearing creative masks to visit the temporary street market on Tongzhou Street will receive a small gift, with 30 spots available each day.
