Blending European retro and Japanese simplicity: Renovated by Tadao Ando, the most anticipated new art sanctuary in Paris – “Pinault Private Collection Museum”

The fashion world is currently embracing the trend of mixing and matching, creating different feelings through the combination of different styles. It’s surprising to see the same concept being applied to architectural aesthetics, bringing unexpected delights! François Pinault, the chairman of the Kering Group, is a well-known art lover and collector, with assets including the Palazzo Grassi in Venice and the Customs House Museum. This list is about to grow with the addition of the “Pinault Private Collection Museum” at the Bourse de Commerce.

The Pinault Private Collection Museum, formerly the Paris Stock Exchange, is located in the heart of the Les Halles district in Paris. Purchased by François Pinault, it was extensively renovated. As in the past, he invited the renowned Japanese architect and Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, Tadao Ando, to personally design the renovation of this century-old historic building into a new Parisian art landmark that art enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating.

After the skillful transformation by Tadao Ando, the renovated Pinault Private Collection Museum is simply marvelous! This master craftsman truly lives up to his reputation, perfectly blending European retro and Japanese minimalist aesthetics harmoniously together. The architectural design, where new and old elements coexist, is worth careful appreciation.

Tadao Ando retained the architectural structure of glass and metal domes, allowing natural light to slowly penetrate, and then extended this structure to surround the nearly 30-foot high iconic concrete columns, creating a vast exhibition space, also witnessing how architectural elements from different centuries and styles are combined to engage in a dialogue between the past and the present.

In addition to preserving the original architectural structure, Tadao Ando also restored the 19th-century panoramic murals in the museum, which are listed as historical monuments in France, and divided the space into theaters, auditoriums, restaurants, etc. It is worth mentioning that the public can enjoy views of the Saint-Eustache Church, the Paris Les Halles shopping center, the Pompidou Center, and other scenery from the restaurant, making the museum not only a space for art enthusiasts to admire but also a public space for the public to relax.

The Pinault Private Collection will reopen to the public in September, with François Pinault openly sharing over 5000 pieces from his collection, including masterpieces by Mondrian and Rothko. The exhibition will also feature works by young emerging artists, including paintings, photography, sculptures, and installations. Whether to immerse yourself in the art atmosphere or to admire the extraordinary architecture of the museum, it is definitely worth a visit.
