Phillips has been holding “New Now” auction events in New York and London for many years. This year, in order to expand into the Asian market, they held their first “New Now and Design” auction at their Asian headquarters in the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong, showcasing over 100 pieces.
The first-ever “New Now and Design” auction in Asia not only showcases emerging Western artists but also shifts the focus to Asia, bringing together works by contemporary artists from China, Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia. In addition to promising newcomers like Kelly Beeman and Gao Hang, the auction also features works by highly sought-after artists in the art auction market such as Mr., Mehdi Ghadyanloo, and Fang Yuan.
Mr.’s work “Eternal First Time” was painted in 2007 and is a rare early piece. During this time, Mr. focused on detailed depictions of landscapes and cityscapes, as seen in this artwork being auctioned, showcasing a less common painting aesthetic in his recent works.
As for the Iranian artist Mehdi Ghadyanloo, known for his works in the style of surrealism, the presented “Eternal Door” can be considered a masterpiece. He transforms the three-dimensional structure of a room onto a two-dimensional canvas, creating a visual illusion and constructing a surreal flat space.
And the art creation of Chinese artist Fang Yuan has also attracted international attention in recent times. Her works use a bold style to create a strong visual impact, which is understood as the embodiment of abstract concepts such as memory, emotion, and vulnerability.
