Artistic inspiration comes from life insights, while life experiences are also inspired by art. Before the upcoming season, Christie’s introduced a series of art masterpieces in a brand new way. Christie’s auction house, in collaboration with Johnnie Walker, specially crafted a variety of art cocktails inspired by selected contemporary artworks of the season for a private dinner before the “20th Century and Contemporary Art and Design” auction, using Johnnie Walker Blue Label as the base spirit, allowing guests to appreciate famous paintings through fine wine.
These creative cocktails are designed by Art Fatkullin, the award-winning Chief Mixologist of the renowned Hong Kong bar The Old Man and winner of the Diageo World Class Hong Kong and Macau 2021 cocktail competition. The materials and flavors are all designed according to Art’s personal interpretation of paintings, showcasing how art can be integrated into life experiences.
“Red and Blue Landscape” is a creation by David Hockney at the young age of 28, beautifully blending geometric cubism, surrealist abstract, and still life painting, showcasing the artist’s extraordinary ability to translate whimsical ideas onto canvas. The piece displays a variety of breathtaking brushstrokes – from curtains, floors, figures, and seascapes, the artist juxtaposes mixed color blocks and short, brisk pointillist textures with different brushstrokes, creating an overall image resembling a lively dance.
The mixologist created this cocktail by using a scientific approach. He combined Blue Label, apricot, wormwood, sand, salt, longan, and carbon dioxide to recreate the deep perspective and elusive figures in the painting.
In this work by Nicolas Party, the saturated bright orange, bright deep red, and rich orange tones amplify the realism between the two figures. In this piece, both protagonists have the artist’s typical deep red lipstick and light purple eyeshadow makeup on their faces, showcasing the ambiguous and mysterious identity of the characters in the painting.
The mixologist paired Scottish whisky with heavy ingredients such as pineapple, bergamot, sea buckthorn, and turmeric, and finally topped it with whey protein to balance the texture. To match the image of the character in the painting applying lipstick, Art specially created a lipstick with a raspberry chocolate flavor, which is very creative.
Anna Weyant is one of the most prominent emerging female artists in the international art scene today, using a soft and vintage touch to depict the female body in her work. The artist draws on centuries of Western painting techniques and references a series of classics in art history in this piece, such as modifying the pose of Venus in the Renaissance masterpiece “The Birth of Venus” and continuing the color palette of the Dutch classical masters of the 17th century.
The mixologist focuses on the use of colors, he sees that Anna’s work fully utilizes mature colors such as deep green, grayish taupe pink, and deep black, so he removes the moisture from the Pink Lady apple, verbena, and marigold, to create a drink that is closer to Anna’s painting tones, while still maintaining diversity.
American artist George Condo is not only hailed as the “heir of Picasso,” but also recognized as one of the most creative and prolific artists of his generation. “Transparent Female Form” is from his groundbreaking series of “sketch paintings.” Condo combines drawing techniques with precise use of paint, and this ingenuity marks the beginning of his golden decade. The work shows his breaking of tradition, blending the creative processes of sketching and oil painting, while retaining the artist’s unique “psychological cubism” technique.
Inspired by Condo’s fusion of various creative techniques and materials, Art treats this cocktail as his canvas, incorporating vetiver grass, sweet and sour ginger, refined honey, and smoked colorful aromas, using a variety of mixing methods and techniques to create this “cross-disciplinary” cocktail.
