The Phillips “20th Century & Contemporary Art & Design” Hong Kong Spring Auction will be held in June. Building on the success of the previous season’s contemporary art auction, this season will continue with the theme of “Ultra/Neo,” bringing not only the masterpieces of emerging Asian artists but also works from international emerging artists at the forefront of today’s market!
When it comes to the most popular young artists of the moment, the names of Spanish artists Javier Calleja, Edgar Plans, and Rafa Macarrón are definitely not to be missed. They all like to express their inner struggles against loneliness, inequality, and nostalgia from the perspective of a child’s imaginative world, showcasing the contemporary art wave in Spain. This season will bring Calleja’s deeply popular “big-eyed boy” works, as well as Edgar Plans and Rafa Macarrón’s largest works ever seen in the auction market.
It also includes works by a group of young female artists from around the world, each creating a unique personal style with their own artistic vocabulary. Last season, Rokkaku Ayako’s work set a record at the Fuyi Auction, and this year she will continue to bring “Untitled” created in 2019, embodying the artist’s iconic colorful cartoon-style painting aesthetics.
In addition, several young female artists who are currently less seen in the Asian art scene will also be presented, including Issy Wood, Danielle Orchard, and Melissa Brown. Orchard draws inspiration from the styles and themes of oil painting masters such as Picasso and Matisse, depicting female nudes in a more abstract way as a tribute to modern art.
Melissa Brown, who made her debut in the Asian art scene, excels at interpreting everyday scenery in a fun way, adding a touch of surrealism to landscape paintings with her rich imagination, injecting abstract qualities, inviting viewers to step into her dreamy unreal world.
Contemporary artists imitating children’s drawings and returning to simple iconographic composition techniques are becoming increasingly common. The auction brought Aboudia’s large-scale work “Untitled (Take Me Away II)”, which is an early representative work of his iconic graffiti. His paintings reflect the childhood of children who have been ravaged by war, documenting the recent history of his country. His works have become very popular in the auction market in recent years, breaking records last year and making him one of the top ten highest-priced artists in the auction market.
The Hong Kong Spring Auction of “20th Century and Contemporary Art and Design” will be held on June 21st to 22nd. Can this auction continue the success of the previous season’s white glove sale? Stay tuned!
