With the cancellation of the mask mandate and the relaxation of entry policies in Hong Kong, the social atmosphere has become more lively, and the art scene has also shown a long-awaited vibrancy! March has always been known as Hong Kong’s art month, as numerous large-scale international art fairs, local art organizations, and galleries have come up with various ways to bring a multitude of exciting cultural projects and exhibitions to local audiences. Below, we will organize the art programs in Hong Kong for March and select 9 local art events, allowing you, who have been eagerly awaiting, to immerse yourself in an artistic atmosphere throughout the month!

Basel Art Exhibition Hong Kong Exhibition 2023
Date: March 23 to 25, 2023

Among the leading events of Hong Kong Arts Month, Art Basel is definitely a must-mention! The Basel Art Fair Hong Kong Exhibition will return to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) this year, featuring a total of 177 participating galleries from 32 countries and regions. This is a significant increase compared to the 130 galleries that participated in the 2022 exhibition! And most importantly, in the past few years, due to the pandemic, the scale of the exhibition has been reduced to one floor. However, the organizers have announced that this year, it will return to two floors, welcoming art enthusiasts from around the world!

This year’s exhibition brings back the “Art Gathering Space” area for the audience, showcasing a series of large-scale installation art. At the same time, various galleries will also exhibit works in the “Gallery Collection,” “Asian Perspective,” “Art Exploration,” “Light Reflection Scene,” and “Curatorial Corner” areas.

2. Art Central 2023
Date: March 23 to 25, 2023

Held concurrently with Art Basel, Art Central is an event that focuses on local and Asian galleries. The 8th edition of the exhibition brings together 72 influential galleries from Hong Kong, Asia, and around the world, distributed across the main exhibition area, selected booths, and individual exhibitions. This year’s exhibition will feature a series of exciting programs, including immersive installation art projects, as well as a series of public lectures and mobile video presentations in collaboration with the Asia Society Hong Kong Center. In addition, the venue will showcase “Drifting in Wonders” – four large-scale sculptures and installation projects, which are expected to be eye-catching works. Stay tuned!

3. HKwalls Street Art and Mural Festival
Date: March 18th to 26th, 2023

HKwalls will hold its 8th Street Art and Mural Festival in the Central and Western District of Hong Kong Island! Artists will transform walls throughout the district into original works of art and invite international artists from around the world to join. Through their unique and aesthetically pleasing murals, artists will turn street corners into outdoor galleries, continuing to promote street graffiti art culture. In the eastern part of Tsim Sha Tsui, the exterior walls of commercial buildings will showcase artwork created by renowned contemporary visual artist J. Demsky from Spain. Hong Kong Arts Festival 2023: A Diverse Celebration of Art Performances

Entering its 51st edition, this year’s Hong Kong Arts Festival is themed “Rewards and Progress,” symbolizing everyone coming together again to savor the performing arts. The organizers have invited numerous outstanding local and international artists to present over 40 programs, totaling more than 110 performances, as well as over 300 outreach activities, aiming to bring art to different corners of the community. In the realm of music, the acclaimed opera couple Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov will collaborate with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra to present a concert. Additionally, there will be an immersive opera “The Cunning Little Vixen,” and a dance performance “First Step,” among many other diverse programs that can be discovered on the official website!

5. Hong Kong Museum of Art: “Miró’s Poetic Everyday” Exhibition

Spanish art master Juan Miró is famous for his surrealistic works and is known as one of the “Three Giants of Spanish Modern Art” along with Picasso and Dalí. The Hong Kong Museum of Art recently collaborated with the Juan Miró Foundation in Spain to present the exhibition “Miró’s Poetic Everyday,” showcasing over 90 carefully curated masterpieces from different periods and mediums.

Hong Kong’s first large-scale exhibition of gold artifacts at the Palace Museum

The Hong Kong Palace Museum of Culture brings the first special exhibition of museum collections, “Golden Splendor – Ancient Gold Objects from the Hong Kong Palace Museum of Culture and the Dream Butterfly Pavilion.” This is the largest gold object exhibition in Hong Kong in recent years, showcasing over 220 sets of gold objects from the Dream Butterfly Pavilion, tracing the artistic and technological achievements of gold products in China’s history of over 3000 years. Some of the precious items include exquisite gold jewelry worn by ancient nobles, as well as decorations for their horses and carriages. Despite the passage of time, these exquisite objects still shine with a golden glow, and most of them are being exhibited publicly for the first time.

7. Fringe: Unveiling of the Asian New Headquarters at the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong presents an auction preview
Date: March 18 to April 5, 2023

Fosun Art Center’s highly anticipated new Asian headquarters in the West Kowloon Cultural District of Hong Kong will hold its opening ceremony on March 18th, and announce the opening exhibition and schedule for the Hong Kong Spring Auction. The new headquarters has a total area of over 52,000 square feet and spans six floors from the ground to the fifth floor. The exhibition space on the ground and first floors, as well as the auction hall equipped with advanced technology to enhance the collector’s experience, will kick off during the Hong Kong Art Week in March.

There will be two auction previews during the opening period, from March 18th to April 5th, including the three major categories of “20th Century and Contemporary Art”, watches, and jewelry, which will be held from May to July.

8. JR “GIANTS: Rising Up” public art installation lands at Harbour City
Date: Mid-March to late April

During Hong Kong Art Month, Harbour City has invited renowned French artist JR to bring his “Outdoor Art Gallery” to Hong Kong, showcasing the first-ever GIANTS series installation art in Asia in mid-March! The GIANTS series is aptly named for its massive size, transforming his black and white portrait photographs into art installations.

The exhibited work “GIANTS: Rising Up” will be located from a maritime perspective, embracing a 270-degree view of Victoria Harbour. Unlike previous works that used iron bars as the artistic installation framework, JR this time incorporates Hong Kong’s unique architectural craftsmanship, the “bamboo scaffolding,” into the artwork.

9. K11 MUSEA Heavyweight Street Art Exhibition: “City As Studio” Exhibition
