As the epidemic eases, major arts and cultural institutions are gradually reopening. The Hong Kong Museum of Art, which has been closed since January, has now reopened to the public and brought six new themed exhibitions, including “Walking with the Times”, “Understanding and Appreciating Chinese Landscape Paintings”, “Wu Guanzhong – Sketching Life”, “Beyond Words – From Contextual Framework to Appreciation Itself”, “Self-Portraits Without Second Thought”, and “Canton Shopping Chronicles – Export Art from the 18th to 19th Century”, allowing everyone to indulge in art!

“Revisiting the Familiar” exhibition selects lesser-known works by renowned artists such as Wu Guanzhong, Chou Luyun, Chen Fushan, Han Zhixun, and Tang Jingsen from the museum’s collection, examining the turning points in their artistic careers. The exhibition also invites local designer Tsai Kin Hung to serve as the chief artist, along with seven Hong Kong contemporary artists, to respond to current changes with new works in different media.

The “Exploring and Appreciating Chinese Landscape Painting” exhibition uses art technology as the key to unlock the way to appreciate traditional landscape paintings, deconstructing the creative secrets of master landscape painters. Through various immersive interactive digital experiences, traditional landscape paintings are no longer limited to paper, allowing the audience to feel as if they are in a world of mountains and rivers.

“Wu Guanzhong – Sketching Life” focuses on the 3-meter-long “Original Sketch of Han Bai” by the master of Chinese painting, Wu Guanzhong, along with other selected sketch manuscripts from the collection and related artworks based on the original sketch of Han Bai, allowing the audience to glimpse into the master’s inspiration and how it led to many classic works in the future.

“Beyond Words – From Contextual Framework to Appreciation Itself” exhibition showcases a series of digital art pieces created by local artist Wu Zikun, commissioned by the art gallery. Through multimedia interactive forms, it breaks the conventional way of appreciating art, reconstructing diverse imaginations beyond the focus of the four major collections.

The “Self-Portrait Without Hesitation” exhibition created by new media artist Zhu Lixing compares the portraits in the art gallery’s collection to contemporary selfies, allowing the public to deconstruct the visual elements of the collection itself through interactive installations, thus constructing their own self-image. Visitors can select different eye, nose, and mouth images from the art gallery’s collection, or use their own faces to create a unique self-portrait.

Next Friday, the “Guangzhou Shopping Chronicles – 18th to 19th Century Export Art” exhibition will showcase a variety of export art treasures selected from the Hong Kong Museum of Art and other local public and private collections. Drawing inspiration from the travelogues of Westerners visiting Guangdong in the 19th century, the museum has constructed an interactive Guangzhou shopping street in the exhibition hall, allowing visitors to embark on a historical and artistic window shopping journey.

The other exhibitions at the art museum include “Heartbeat. Landscape – Selected Paintings from Xubai Studio (2)”, “#ColorSearch – The Color Aesthetics of Museum Collections” second phase exhibition, and outdoor art exhibition “Between Reality and Illusion”, all featuring a new batch of exciting exhibits and added interactive elements.

You who have not visited the art gallery for a long time, why not have an art gallery day trip this weekend!
