Recently, the French department store Le Bon Marché has attracted a group of people taking selfies with their phones. However, they are not here for the discounts, but to take photos with the pink giant (monsieur rose) in different corners of the mall!
These giant pink figures are all created by French artist Philippe Katerine, who is a director, writer, composer, singer, lyricist, and painter all in one. Katerine occasionally appears in comedies, and his distinctive image with a large beard leaves a lasting impression on people. Despite being a professional actor, his humor is not an act, and he transforms this ability to create joy into artistic creations. This playful creator has crafted several whimsical pink sculptures, placed in the courtyard of a Parisian department store, extending all the way to the exhibition space on the second floor, successfully capturing the attention of many.
In his creative world, any object, food, or animal has a humorous shape. Sometimes they appear in flat paintings, and sometimes they appear in the form of three-dimensional sculptures, bringing laughter to those who see them. In addition to these giant sculpture installations, the artist also holds solo exhibitions at the same venue. Through painting, sketching, sculpture, and photography, he records everyday interesting things, definitely worth a look. Furthermore, the space also features a series of clothing and merchandise themed around black humor and popular aesthetics, allowing everyone to carry the artist’s humor with them!
Katerine’s creative philosophy is “As long as you open your eyes: you can always find cute things somewhere, it’s just a matter of perception.” Through the exhibition, the artist wants to remind visitors that unexpected creativity can be hidden anywhere, as long as we observe carefully, maybe we can always find cute things somewhere!
