Renowned artist Hiroshi Nagaba collaborates with UNIQLO to create a minimalist style collection inspired by various historical collections from the Louvre.

Currently, there is a trend of aesthetic minimalism that focuses on simplicity and cleanliness, not only applied to furniture decoration and clothing styles but also extended to artistic creation. Popular Japanese artist Yu Nagaba is known for his minimalist black and white drawings, without any unnecessary coloring, creating a whole new style with his “minimalist” strokes. Recently, UNIQLO has launched The Louvre x Yu Nagaba series, inviting Yu Nagaba to reinterpret historical art collections through modern illustrations, allowing everyone to incorporate minimalist art into their daily lives!

The Louvre x Yu Nagaba series is part of the collaboration between UNIQLO and the Louvre, depicting world-famous masterpieces from the museum’s collection with the simple, soft, and distinctive brushstrokes of popular artist Yu Nagaba, bringing a fresh perspective to appreciating Western art.

The artist had already showcased reinterpretations of famous paintings by artists such as Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso in his solo exhibition “Be Thankful For What You Got” in Taiwan last year. For this collaborative series, Yu Nagaba drew inspiration from over 35,000 exhibition pieces at the Louvre, including Greek sculptures, European paintings, and Egyptian art, paying homage to the originals with his minimalist illustrations. The new collection of clothing and accessories reveals thoughtful details and a modern sensibility within its simple design.

Yoshi Nagaba stated that the first painting he imitated was “Mona Lisa,” believing that the best way to showcase this style is by reshaping familiar and beloved images. Returning to “Mona Lisa” through this project holds deep meaning for the artist, as he expressed his enjoyment in carefully studying the characteristics of the original artwork and the entire process of completing the piece.

This series of products also includes The Louvre x Yu Nagaba plates and The Louvre x Yu Nagaba cups, which are the first new products of the UT and Louvre collaboration project. These adorable Bizen-yaki ceramics are a type of pure white Japanese traditional porcelain, designed with exquisite blue patterns, providing a simple way to incorporate art into daily life.

The Louvre x Yu Nagaba series will be available for purchase at UNIQLO stores and online flagship stores on January 31 (Monday). Are you ready to get your hands on it?
