When it comes to major local cultural events, do you first think of art fairs? However, with diverse art forms, have you also noticed that there is a festival in the local area dedicated to presenting various artistic performances? “Jockey Club New Arts Power” presents over 100 art events from September to January each year, bringing creative, high-quality, and locally flavored art experiences to all sectors of society.
Over the past 4 years, we have curated 34 performance programs, multiple multimedia installations, and exhibitions. Many participating artists focus on creating, refining the content and production of their works. The program formats are diverse, covering music, dance, drama, traditional Chinese opera, opera, experimental theater, as well as multimedia installations, visual arts, and other different categories. This year’s art festival officially opened this month, let us first share three of them with you.
Wuji Band – The Aristocratic Wuji’s “Let It Be”
The Infinite Band once again combines Western jazz elements in an imagery music concert. The musical creation idea is like a scroll landscape painting, unfolding slowly with the rhythm of music, presenting mountains, rivers, and shores one by one, showing everything in front of the eyes. The strange peaks and ridges overlap in height and distance, seemingly standing alone in the world but also connected by a river, with the collision, connection, and fusion of two musical languages, carrying on a tradition.
The concert begins with a trio of pipa, cello, and singing bowls, each instrument taking turns to gradually introduce a new piece by composer Lu Aoyuan. This is followed by a pure jazz dialogue between piano and clarinet, with the pipa and yangqin gradually blending in, adding a hint of Eastern flavor to the Western musical tones, leading to the compositions of composer Huang Zhiying. The collision of jazz drums and guzheng continues the rhythm, elevating the atmosphere to conclude with an improvisational piece by the orchestra’s artistic director, Professor Luo Yonghui. The overall music rises and falls in a harmonious manner, showcasing a spiritual realm of “no distinction between self and others, freely wandering.”
Lin Feng X Another Hermit “Feng · Ren · Dream”
Local composer Lin Feng and cross-disciplinary visual artist You Yishan collaborate for the first time, combining their usual and natural aesthetic perspectives to create a cross-disciplinary performance that navigates between the ordinary and the extraordinary.
For the past twenty years, Lin Feng has been tirelessly exploring the endless possibilities of music. In this concert, he will carefully select his uniquely styled personal works, leading a live performance with the Hong Kong contemporary music group on the piano himself. Under the direction and stage visual design of another mountain person, the music “daydream” will be echoed by images and installations that are both real and illusory.
“BB Greater Than Heaven Point, Line, Surface”
If a gentle yawn can blow out small bubbles, will a long and powerful sneeze pull out a long silk ribbon?
The Big Small Road Theatre, with rich experience in children’s theater, carefully produces a children’s theater specially designed for children aged 2 to 6. Combining elements such as drama, physical movement, music, and projection, it allows both young and old audiences to immerse themselves in a fantastical world of imagination. Rainbow bubbles descend from the sky, simple lines and shapes transform into different forms of beauty. Curious little minds explore the infinite variations of points, lines, and surfaces together, learning to appreciate different qualities and discovering the big world from small things.
