Many trendsetters have probably read “The Woman in Kenzo” before. Originally published in a magazine, the story starts with the protagonist, Mary, and describes how she and her friends Jan, Martha, and Mimi, urban women, navigate through work, fashion life, and different social circles, striving for success in both work and love.
The book “The Woman Who Wears Kenzo” was later compiled and became a classic work of Hong Kong popular culture. Currently, their story is about to be adapted into a stage play by a Chinese and English theater group, reinterpreted in the form of a musical, much to the anticipation of fashionistas and book lovers!
This performance is created by the gold medal creative team of Ko Sai Cheung, Samson Sin Wai Chung, and Szeto Wai Chak, collaborating to create a classic musical theater piece that belongs to Hong Kong. Following its public reading in 2013, this year marks the first full presentation on stage. As the written story transitions to the stage, the costumes of the characters naturally become the focus. Recently, the theater company released posters of the different versions of the production, allowing the public to catch a glimpse of the characters’ styles.
Each character in the play has a distinct personality. In the eyes of Qian Mali: “Wearing Kenzo, stepping on a pair of Christian Dior shoes to work in Central, plus the nourishment of love, life can almost meet the glamorous expectations.” However, at the age of twenty-eight, at the peak of her career, facing friendship tests, and the end of love, can she ultimately find her place between women’s jealousy and societal comparisons?
For Mimi Cow, instead of waiting for happiness to come, it’s better to take the initiative! She said, “A woman’s fertility starts to decline from the age of thirty,” Can she, who is eager to get married, find an ideal husband with courage and become a good wife and mother as she wishes?
Jan, who is passionate and open-minded, once boldly declared, “When it comes to men, the three of them combined can’t match me. Whether Chinese or foreigner, when choosing a man, he must be tall enough, rough enough, and have a rugged look to be the most masculine.” With her extraordinary charm, how does she manage to win over her desired targets one by one with her exquisite dressing?
Martha, who dresses relatively modestly, believes that “money is more reliable than men.” While her good girlfriends are all looking for true love one after another, she can’t help but start to feel restless. With the mentality of “as long as there is money, there is no need to worry about not having a man for the rest of her life,” will she be able to meet a man who will change her in the end?
To be able to express the inner thoughts of urban women facing work, love, life, and friendship in such a sharp language, no one would have expected that this book was written by the famous writer Mr. Deng Xiaoyu. He can not only share the most popular fashion trends of the moment, but also share lifestyle tastes, as well as the little thoughts of women facing love relationships, making people sigh how the author understands women better than women themselves. Want to know if this musical can bring to life these lovely new era women, everyone may consider buying tickets to watch!
