Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the new Central landmark The Henderson, a Grade A commercial building that has not yet been completed, has already welcomed the exciting news of the leading auction house moving in! Sotheby’s announced that in two years, they will relocate their Asia Pacific headquarters to this new Central landmark, which will have 50,000 square feet of four floors of art space. With the expansion of this new space, Sotheby’s claims that future auctions will no longer be limited by time or location!
The Henderson, led by the late architectural master Zaha Hadid’s firm, has attracted attention since the release of the building design drawings, due to its unique streamlined appearance resembling a Bauhinia flower. Located in the heart of Central, it enjoys a beautiful view of the western city skyline. Now, Christie’s Asia Pacific headquarters is located in the historic Alexandra House in Central, occupying three floors with an area of approximately 40,000 square feet, with the space occasionally used as a pre-auction exhibition venue. Upon relocation to the new site, Christie’s will have a permanent auction hall and gallery, a vast scale comparable to Christie’s headquarters on King Street in London.
During the spring and autumn auctions, Christie’s will rent the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center as the auction venue. With the expansion of space, Christie’s can not only save on rental costs but also change from quarterly auctions to permanent auctions without venue or time constraints. This will definitely help Christie’s gather global auction market context and expert resources, as well as meet the rapidly growing group of Asian collectors. According to auction market statistics, collectors in the Asia-Pacific region account for about 50% of the global luxury auction value, and Hong Kong, as the center of the Asian art market, plays a crucial role in providing an excellent platform for art sales.
Due to its unique and forward-thinking design, The Henderson stands in the heart of Central like a piece of art. With the arrival of Christie’s, this building had already become a hot topic before its opening. For Christie’s, the addition of a permanent auction center and art gallery gives them greater flexibility, allowing them to host auctions and art events year-round, and everyone is looking forward to the official opening of Christie’s brand new art space in 2024!
