The long out-of-print photography collection “Memories of Hong Kong” is once again available, looking back at the old Hong Kong through the lens of the “master” photographer Ho Fan.

When it comes to the late Chinese-American director and master photographer Ho Fan, everyone will definitely think of the three photography collections that have been out of print for many years and are known as the “classic trilogy”. Among them, the first installment, “Hong Kong Yesterday,” is the most representative work. After many years, the American publisher Modernbook recently reissued this precious photography collection, allowing everyone to once again appreciate the old Hong Kong through the lens of Ho Fan.

Nicknamed the “Grandmaster” of the photography world, Ho Fan was born in Shanghai in 1931 and later moved to Hong Kong in 1949. A passionate lover of the art of photography, he is not only an honorary member of multiple international photography associations but has also won numerous international awards. His photography collection “Hong Kong Memoir,” published in 2006, showcases his works from the 1950s and 60s.

Ho Fan captured the streets and alleys of Hong Kong through his lens, showcasing old-style shops, wooden houses, rickshaws, as well as hairstyles, cheongsams, and other clothing styles of the past. These images evoke nostalgia and collective memories of the past. In a series of black and white photographs full of a sense of the times, it is also not difficult to discover unique lighting effects, as well as a composition style that is both realistic and artistic, reflecting Ho Fan’s pioneering photography skills of that era.
