Sotheby’s will hold a contemporary art evening auction on July 9th at 7:00 pm, featuring an international lineup of works covering Asian and Western art, with a total estimate of over approximately 480 million Hong Kong dollars, marking the highest record in the history of Sotheby’s Asia. There are a total of 48 lots, with artists including Clyfford Still, Albert Oehlen, Bai Hairi, Yayoi Kusama, and Yoshitomo Nara. In addition, the “Art of Living” featured in the evening and day auctions will focus on lifestyle art, design, and sculpture.
One of the important highlights of the auction is David Hockney’s “Thirty Sunflowers”, which has recently gained momentum. This painting is one of his works that returned to figurative painting after 10 years of studying photographic aesthetics, expressing the ultimate in still life painting with brilliant colors, elaborating on his delicate emotions, and possessing his unique artistic style, while also paying tribute to Van Gogh.
The other leading work is “Let Me Stay in the Darkness” by Liu Ye, who has been a rising star in the contemporary art scene in China in recent years. Painted in 2008, this piece is one of Liu Ye’s four large-scale figure paintings, which is quite different in style compared to the other three pieces in the “Red Series”. The main character in the painting is a little girl standing in the wind and snow, wearing a headscarf, a gray coat, plaid trousers, and dragging a suitcase. Although there is no narrative element, it unexpectedly exudes a narrative atmosphere. Combining realism and geometric abstraction, as well as techniques from realism, postmodern appropriation, and Eastern and Western art, the painting emits a timeless poetic quality. The estimated value of “Let Me Stay in the Darkness” is between 25 to 35 million Hong Kong dollars.
Other works include Yoshitomo Nara’s “Swinging Long Sleeves”, “Cheer Up”, and Clyfford Still’s “PH-306”.
