Take you into the 2D world! French artist Jean Jullien’s giant paper man sits in a legendary shopping mall.

Recently, two giant paper people jumped out of the paper, leaped into the courtyard of the legendary Parisian department store Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche. One sat on a pile of books reading, while the other reached into the “bookshelf,” making you feel like you were also being “flattened”!

This exhibition, curated by the legendary department store Le Bon Marché, is named “Mise en Page,” bringing together books, coffee, and publishing selections, inviting everyone into the world of paper!

Exhibition “Mise en Page”

Walking into a department store, shopping is of course the main purpose, but the collaboration space Le Bon Marché, which has always been fixed with different artists, has long broken the boundaries between art and commerce. In the past, Le Bon Marché has hosted many heavyweight exhibitions, attracting many people to come. This not only allows different artists and works to appear in the public eye, but also becomes a gathering place for art and commerce, creating a unique shopping mall experience that is definitely not to be missed!

Instead, the “Mise en Page” exhibition focuses on “reading,” sharing the charm of paper printing. Especially in this era of technological advancement, e-books are becoming mainstream, gradually overlooking the value of physical books. Therefore, Le Bon Marché entrusted the artist Jean Jullien to tell stories, starting from his visual art, to help everyone rediscover and experience the joy of paper and reading.

At the exhibition, the most eye-catching are two giant three-story paper figure installations, which are the work of Jean Jullien.

From a young age, Jean Jullien, who loves comics, excels in using his wild imagination, combining observations and feelings about daily life to draw out satirical comedy stories. Although Jean Jullien currently resides in Paris, his works can be found in art galleries and galleries around the world, and have been featured in various media such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, National Geographic, etc. He has received attention and commercial collaborations from many international brands such as Beams, RCA Records, The Connaught, etc. His works span across different categories including illustration, photography, fashion, installations, books, posters, and skateboards.

However, Jean Jullien not only formed the creative group “Jullien Brothers” with his brother Nicolas Jullien to release animated works, but also published his first personal collection in 2022, delving deep into his artistic world. In recent years, he has also launched his own brand “NouNou” with Korean artist Jae Huh, taking over Korean pop culture with a face, becoming one of the popular brands in Korea, and can be said to be quirky and limitless.

And the paper people he draws are one of the most distinctive styles: simple lines, bright colors paired with quirky expressions, not only full of childlike fun and high recognition, but also bring people the feeling of a “flattened” two-dimensional world, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

It can be seen that Jean Jullien’s storytelling style is concise and easy to understand, which is in line with the exhibition concept of “Mise en Page,” making it a perfect match.

These two cute and healing giant paper people will be sitting in the mall from February 24th to April 21st.

If you are in France enjoying or participating in Fashion Week, why not try to experience the charm of physical paper together with Jean Jullien’s creative perspective!
