Wishing you smooth sailing! Local artist Bianca Tse shoots windmills on site to create an AI artwork for the Lunar New Year.

AI digital art pieces are prevalent, browsing social networks every day, you will always see many AI creative images that make people smile. Local artist Bianca Tse also loves to create with AI, connecting reality and imagination, and recently used an iPhone 15 Pro Max to shoot scenes, creating a series of AI digital art pieces themed around windmills for the upcoming Lunar New Year, symbolizing smooth sailing in the new year.

Bianca, who has always had a unique affection for old Hong Kong, started her IG in April last year to share her work that has always fascinated her in Kowloon Walled City. At last year’s Digital Art Fair, she also used Kowloon Walled City as the theme, constructing another balanced Kowloon Walled City in a different space-time through AI, leaving a deep impression.

This work is also full of local characteristics and is a collection of memories for Hong Kong people. Bianca chose to create based on the theme of “windmills”, not only because it is something everyone has come into contact with in their childhood, but also because Bianca has lived in the New Territories since she was young. During Chinese New Year, she would visit the Che Kung Temple with her family and bring back beautifully designed, sparkling windmills as souvenirs, which are not only beautiful but also symbolize good luck.

During the creative process, Bianca considered that relying solely on AI to generate images based on text descriptions may not be able to produce Chinese-style windmills. Bianca initially attempted to generate a “Chinese windmill” using only text descriptions, but Midjourney could not grasp this concept, resulting in a generated image that looked very different from the real thing, leaning more towards fans or closer to Western styles.

In order to make the video more lifelike, she decided to personally visit the Chogong Temple and use an iPhone 15 Pro Max to shoot on-site footage, then add the photos to Midjourney and AI-generated images, and use a Mac for post-production, creating AI digital artwork that is rich in imagination while retaining realistic elements.

“Incorporating these elements into my work allows me to explore the interesting and unique aspects of Hong Kong culture, with AI adding an element of fun to the final result. I really enjoy the stunning visual effects and unpredictability that come from working with robots. The results can be quite crazy, as I can create visual effects beyond imagination without spending money or causing harm to any humans or animals. It’s a win-win situation where I can unleash unlimited creativity without compromising ethics.”

When it comes to creative inspiration, Bianca believes that various content can serve as a source of inspiration, whether it’s books, news, movies, or even browsing memes. However, for her, exploring outside and finding extraordinary things in ordinary moments of daily life is the best way to get inspired. Therefore, whenever she discovers something interesting, she always takes photos and videos as references for future use, fully embodying the concept that art creation originates from life.
