Comparisons aside, when you know that Hedi Slimane will independently present CELINE’s Winter 22 menswear collection during Paris Fashion Week, it’s hard not to be drawn to his consistent and unique approach. Especially when Anthony Vaccarello unveils his latest collection that sets the fashion world abuzz, what you anticipate is another magical display by Hedi Slimane.
This season, CELINE’s menswear continues the approach of the past few seasons, presented by Hedi Slimane himself in the form of a stylish blockbuster for the latest 2022 winter collection. The film, named BOY DOLL, was shot in the oldest music theater in Paris, L’Olympia. Hedi, who has always emphasized the background music, also brought in the recent Swedish punk genius ShitKid to create “Favourite Thing”, with a stable, strong and powerful beat that truly sets a unique tone for the over 10-minute fashion show.
In the collection, all models, whether they have black, blonde, or brown hair, are styled with a sleek slick-back hairstyle, wearing gold suits, metallic fringe capes, sequined ice-blue tops, creating a dazzling golden light in an almost pitch-black background. In addition, embodying Hedi’s beloved Punk Rock taste, the collection also features oversized leather jackets, frayed denim vests, leopard print fur coats, and even a nostalgically tailored square suit.
However, the most surprising piece has to be the all-black coat covered in sparkling crystals, resembling fish scales. Simply put, this winter 2022 collection looks luxurious even at first glance.
It is worth mentioning that this season, Hedi has also brought in 7 artists to collaborate, even bringing in the painter (and sculptor) Banks Violette, who he met 20 years ago and is skilled in creating art with extremely dark media, to collaborate and print his original artwork on the back of leather jackets. Similarly, the words “DANCING KID” that were painted on in previous seasons have been replaced with the more rock-inspired “BOY DOLL” this season.
The scene was shining brightly, and for a moment it was a bit overwhelming – at least, the eyes needed some time to adjust – but watching figures like James Dean, John Travolta, Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis walk by, all in black mirror outfits, excitement was inevitably driven by Hedi. The only regret is that today’s L’Olympia can no longer see the attendance of regulars like Juliette Gréco, Serge Gainsbourg, The Beatles, and David Bowie.
An all-gold or all-silver look may require a bit of courage, or perhaps a bit of patience – waiting for the world to return to normal so you and I can meet again at parties – in order to truly master it. But why even consider experimenting with a bright red Biker Jacket paired with silver CELINE boots or a patterned coat paired with frayed straight-leg jeans?
