Based in New York, Daniel Arsham is renowned for his paintings, sculptures, and art installations, often exploring the concept of time in his works. He has previously created the “Connecting Time” series. Hublot, which frequently collaborates with artists, has recently appointed Daniel Arsham as its brand ambassador.
To initiate collaboration, Daniel Arsham created a 20-meter tall snow sundial at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. This temporary installation, named “Light & Time,” combines natural elements and land art, merging the origins of timekeeping with the craftsmanship of land art. The outdoor timekeeping device operates based on the shadows cast by a quartz crystal-shaped obelisk, with the central hand casting a shadow on the groomed snow to indicate the time as the sun moves throughout the day.
The sundial echoes the design language of Hublot, while integrating familiar design elements such as the famous screws that fix the bezel of the Big Bang series. This installation also has a clever feature: it can only be seen from the mountaintop. To appreciate it, art enthusiasts must take a cable car ride.
