Gucci Bamboo Handbag 75th Anniversary! Release of the short film “Kaguya by Gucci” with a new interpretation of “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”

Gucci’s bamboo handle handbag has been enduring since its birth in 1947, becoming one of the brand’s classics. In celebration of its 75th anniversary this year, the brand creatively released the short film “Kaguya by Gucci” as a tribute, interpreting Gucci’s bamboo handle handbag with a fresh perspective that blends the past and present.

“Kaguya by Gucci” short film is inspired by the classic Japanese tale “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter,” which tells the story of an old bamboo cutter who discovers a baby girl hidden inside a glowing bamboo stalk in the bamboo forest. He takes her home and raises her, naming her “Princess Kaguya.” Later, Princess Kaguya, known for her extraordinary beauty, attracts numerous suitors, including the Emperor. However, one day she reveals her true identity as a celestial being and returns to the moon, leaving only a radiant light in the hearts of those who knew her. This timeless story, passed down through generations, resonates with the elegance of Gucci’s bamboo handle handbags.

“Kaguya by Gucci” directed by Nagahisa Yuki, with a total length of six minutes, was filmed in Tokyo and stars Japanese actors Mitsushima Hikari and Nagayama Eita, as well as dancer and performer Yamada Aoi. The three main characters are dressed in Gucci Love Parade series clothing, accompanied by original music by composer Shibuya Keiichiro. Against the backdrop of a quiet bamboo forest and the bright moonlight contrasting with the bustling Tokyo, they perform a fantastical, gender-crossing modern version of “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.”

The Gucci Bamboo 1947 collection belongs to the Gucci Beloved series. It aims to connect the past, present, and future, showcasing Alessandro Michele’s emphasis on historical heritage. In the post-World War II era of Italy in 1947, traditional raw materials were scarce, and brand founder Guccio Gucci, with the help of Florentine craftsmen, decided to use lightweight and durable bamboo to make handbag handles, giving birth to the classic design. For decades after the handbag was introduced, it has been loved by Hollywood actresses and socialites, solidifying its iconic status.

The new Gucci Bamboo 1947 handbag features interchangeable leather and Web woven shoulder straps, injecting a fashionable touch into the elegant style, offering various sizes and vibrant color options.
