Born in a multicultural society, people of different nationalities come together here, leading to cross-racial connections. Hong Kong-based Korean photographer Kim Ji-lun has been working on documentary photography and video projects since 2010. Through her camera, she captures images of children born from interracial marriages and their mothers, focusing on racial consciousness and the public’s perception of the different appearances of mother and child or mother and daughter. Recently, this photographer’s decade-long photography project will be exhibited at Soluna Fine Art.

The inspiration for Kin’s project comes from her own experience of being in an interracial marriage and raising mixed-race children. As her children entered their teenage years, she became more interested in their self-presentation as mixed-race individuals. When society pays attention to this group to a certain extent, the children also start to think about issues of “bloodline” and “identity.” Later on, as these children navigate different interpersonal relationships during adolescence, they will also contemplate the establishment of personal values. The intention behind this collection of works is actually to document their unique journey of growth.

In addition, this series of photos captures different combinations of mother and child or mother and daughter. They may have different hair and skin colors, and different appearances, but all of them contain a deep bond between parent and child. Pay attention to how the communication between children and their mothers changes as they transition from infancy to adolescence or adulthood, showcasing the evolving nature of the mother-child or mother-daughter relationship at different stages.
