An 80-year-old grandmother enters the gallery for the first time, using a childlike brushstroke to paint colorful flowers to celebrate the new year!

When it comes to Hong Kong’s street graffiti artists, many people may first think of Kowloon Wong Tai Sin Choi Choi, but it turns out that there is also an artist known as “Flower Granny” in the community, who is also skilled in graffiti. The 80-year-old “Flower Granny” is self-taught. She turns items discarded at the garbage station or walls into canvases and uses childlike brushstrokes and vibrant colors to create a colorful universe. Recently, she made her debut as an artist at the 13a New Street Art Gallery, showcasing a series of works themed around flowers!

This time, Grandma Hua’s personal exhibition “Dancing with Flowers” showcases over 30 artworks. To match the theme of the Chinese New Year, she uses lucky cats, portraits, animals, and highly recognizable flowers as the main creative elements, displaying a spontaneous and charming painting style. It also allows everyone to immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere of her works.

The name “Flower Granny” originated from Granny’s affinity for flowers when she was young. This is not only because she likes flowers, but also because she used to sell flowers in the Mong Kok Flower Market to support her family. She expressed her desire to use the remaining time to thank flowers – the beautiful things that have accompanied her through different life experiences. Perhaps it is because she paints with a grateful heart that her works radiate a joyful light.

The creative medium of Hua Po Po is not limited to the canvas. Whether it’s a frying pan used for cooking, a suitcase used for traveling, or a classic yellow plastic duck that accompanies children during bath time, all can become her materials for creation. She blends vibrant and lively colors with a unique painting style onto everyday household items, embellishing ordinary daily life.
