Moving Drawing: Sketching the Lives of Subway Commuters, the Train Carriages Unexpectedly Become a “Sports Arena” for Hong Kongers!

Most people lower their heads and look at their phones or listen to music when they take the subway. When everyone is crowded together in a small space, have you ever noticed what other passengers are doing? Charlotte, a local illustrator born in the 1990s, not only observes others while riding the train, but also records them with her brush. Since 2021, she has been sharing her daily sketches in MTR carriages on her “Moving Drawing” IG page.

Charlotte will post the process of quietly sketching for others on her page, and she will also give the works to the people in the drawings. This small gesture is very heartwarming. In addition to capturing bizarre moments on the spot, Moving Drawing also collects interesting pictures from netizens and the internet, such as @mtr.sleepers and @inner.sar, and then engages in secondary creation. Later, she found that the most collected pictures were of Hong Kong people “exercising” in the train carriage.

This time she has selected ten “train compartment exercise pictures” for a small personal exhibition at Whatever. Coffee. Hong Kong people are always in a hurry, cleverly doing all kinds of exercises in small spaces, including doing yoga in their seats, stretching on railings, impromptu dance performances, and lifting weights with luggage, etc. The scene is comical and funny.

In addition to using real people and actions as a blueprint, Charlotte also creates another scenario through imagination, such as adding animal characters, making the picture more vivid and interesting, and making people smile.

To thank the support and welcome of netizens for 2023, Moving Drawing is launching special products such as a 2023 calendar, artwork, T-shirts, and eco-friendly bags, allowing everyone to embrace the energy of other passengers in the new year!
