The Italian landmarks under black and white film, Antonio Biagiotti’s darkroom technique develops a vintage Italian light and shadow!

Italy, as the cultural capital, preserves many precious cultural heritages since the Renaissance period, whether in art or architecture. For example, in architecture, we can see temples or churches of different styles such as Baroque, Rococo, Roman, Ancient Greek Byzantine, and Gothic. Through the lens of Italian multimedia artist Antonio Biagiotti, these ancient buildings have become unique aesthetic carriers.

Recently, he brought his solo exhibition “Italian Light and Shadow” to KC100 Art Space, showcasing a series of black and white film photos featuring Italian churches as the main subject. In this digital photography era, some people prefer the unique charm of film photography. Antonio has a passion for vintage large format cameras, wandering around various famous landmarks and ancient sites in Italy, capturing the beauty of classic and solemn architecture through partial visual perspectives. He uses Daguerreotype and traditional darkroom techniques to develop his works, resulting in photos with rich layers and a vintage cinematic feel.

When the screen is devoid of color, the photographer guides the viewer’s gaze to the composition and details of the work, allowing everyone to feel the clever combination of light and space. In his works, the black and white tones create a visual purity, highlighting the emotional connection between the photographer and the architecture. In a society that pursues speed, Antonio enjoys the slow process of developing photos in the darkroom, as if freezing time and turning black and white into another form of eternity.
