Active in the creative field of Japan, artist Ryusuke Sano recently came to Hong Kong! “WAY by Way of Difference” held his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong at the Harbour City Art Gallery, showcasing 13 new works created around his unique visual language, ZOOM.

Zano has been fascinated by cartoons, animations, and comics since childhood. During his teenage years, he was deeply influenced by Western artists such as Egon Schiele, Jackson Pollock, Jean-Michel Basquiat, which is why his style is more free-spirited. He named his self-created visual language “ZOOM,” showcasing a highly individualistic approach to contemporary art examination.

Zuo Nuo will adopt a “discard and establish” approach to his creation. His composition deviates from tradition, disregarding the standards of axis or centrality, touching the emotions, imagination, and cognition of the viewer. Abstraction and concreteness, painting and oil painting, merge together on his canvas, without adhering to any particular style. Sometimes we will see layers upon layers of colors, at times departing from the subject, at times abstract and blank, thus constructing a series of works with rich layers.

Sano’s painting technique perfectly echoes the era we live in – an era of information explosion. He wants to reinterpret the layered imagery that densely enters our minds. With each zoom, viewers can delve into Sano’s creative subject and understand the artist’s creative ideas.

For Sano, all works are his most sincere and spontaneous creations, a record of his inner self. From a distance, Sano presents familiar images through abstract techniques, and it is precisely because of their elusive meaning that they bring forth numerous possibilities for interpreting his works.
